FX 9590 Up to Snuff?

Guest

The AMD FX 9590 seems like a kick ass processor with nearly 5 GHz for 8 cores. Does this chip perform to today's standards of gaming and content creation?

No, no it does not.

If you're doing a new build go for Ryzen if possible.

ok i thought it might not but i was confused by its 5GHz rating

theoretically if you did some insane cooling you could get all 8 cores to 5 GHz right?

it doesnt matter. its not worth it. even the g4560 beats it

Just skip the idea man, its not worth it to.

Buy Ryzen 1600 and you are better off by a million easily.

no, unless there is a HEAVILY multithreaded task the pentium beats it

Stop wondering, its a very bad idea.

But you can do what you want.

Go ahead and do it and tell us your findings.

Sure you can oc it to 5Ghz, its possible!

you can OC kabylake to 5.0 with a good cooler.

You can OC anything to 5GHz if you wished.

Just a matter of time and money.

no its not. eventually youll have to push too much voltage and it will break the chip before you get to 5.0

And with not so insane cooling too. The problem is that you cannot just compare any two CPUs based on clocks alone, since each CPU architectuere is different in trends of how much they can do per GHz.

So, while 8x5.0GHz sounds like a lot, its performance will be rather mediocre compared to modern CPUs. It's also cheaper and easier to find used, though (but you may s well get any used FX-83xx and overclock that). So, it's more about value than about performance.

Also, bear inmind that being "up to the task" depends on, well, the task :P As you can see, most people answer in terms of gaming, which isn't exactly known for making the most out of 8 cores. There are other tasks at which it will do much better relative to other CPUs, but still from what "8 cores, 5GHz" would sound like in Ryzen or Broadwell-E.

Ah, you've got to love the "enthusiast" spirit of this forum...

Looking at just the frequency is not enough to compare the performance between CPUs.

The GHz is like the redline RPM of a car...pretty pointless if you don't know the HP, Torque, other engine specs, etc.

IF you (or the programs you use) can take advantage of the eight cores, then yes, it could out-perform something like a i7-7700K.

BUT seeing how most games only use 2 ~ 4 cores (until more recently), the FX-9590 doesn't do so hot.

You don't need extreme cooling for 5.0 GHz on the FX-9590...or any of the FX CPUs.

High-end air cooling, more ideally, water cooling will be fine.

The FX-9590 already runs at 4.7 GHz across all 8 cores out of the box, and Turbo Boosts up to 5.0 GHz.

I was able to push 4.8 ~ 4.9 GHz on an air cooler for my FX-8350.

5.0 GHz pushed it over the cooler's limit, as it needed ~1.5V Core Voltage to maintain stability.
