How much storage?

What network speed?

What network interface? sfp+? rj45?

How much space.

500 usd is a bit low with drives, your thinking about 300 for the box or more and about 600 for 16tb of drives(with about 11tib usable)

Id get this nas for a basic setup https://www.amazon.com/QNAP-TS-451-Personal-Transcoding-TS-451-US/dp/B00KXP9RJC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1498617845&sr=8-2&keywords=qnap+4+bay

I only care about the box for the $500, drives separate. With RJ45, speed of at least I'd say 100MB/s (so about a gigabit) to each machine, 10-20tb usable.

Then id get a box like this one https://www.amazon.com/Synology-DS416play-NAS-DiskStation-Diskless/dp/B01GB9ZJ3Q/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1498624828&sr=8-4&keywords=synology+4+bay

Then fill it with big drives, and add more drives when you need more storage.
