HDD Clicking Sound

Today I booted my PC. As it was loading the bios the HDD started to make a loud rapid clicking sound. After about a minute the clicking sound starts to fade away, within 5 seconds it stops completely. My HDD is now dead silent. This has happened a couple of times in the past, but rarely occurs back to back. Should I be concerned?

just keep backups and replace it when it dies.

Are you booting from the HDD? It could likely be the actuator adjusting itself.

Its either you will need a NEW ONE or you should DEFRAG. Here's an article about defragging. I do it every 2 months. If that doesn't fix it, let us know!

Yes, I am booting from the HDD.

I set windows to defrag every 2 months or so.

Then it's just the actuator moving across the disk. You may not have noticed until now. 

 

I would search for a new HDD, if you can, for possible compliment to the existing drive.

Normal. How old is the drive?

I got it about 2 years ago.

Do you know what model it is? Some of the older drives don't have a piezoelectric motor for finer, quieter movement so the mechanical actuator has to move far away before moving closer.

Don't know about that one, but you don't have to sweat bullets over this. It's likely fine.

To be on the safe side, you can run CrystalDiskInfo and check on the health of the drive. If it finds any problems indicating a possible drive failure in the near future, it'll help let you know.
