Building my first gaming rig with SGD1700 (Comments please)

Hello all,

I've been a frequent reader of this forum, but I finally decided to create an account to post as well.

I would like to state that I'm from Singapore, so the prices listed are all in SGD. Do convert it to your local currency for your local prices.

This is my first custom gaming rig, so comments would be appreciated!

I would like to run games like BF4 at High to Very High settings with some future proofing.

My budget here is about SGD 1700 not including my peripherals. I also don't plan on doing any overclocking.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CPU - Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor (SGD 227.00)

Motherboard - ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer (SGD 225.00)

CPU Cooler - CoolerMaster Hyper 212 X CPU Cooler (SGD 56.00)

Memory - Corsair Vengeance Pro 1600 CL9 2 x 4GB (SGD 119.00)

SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 120GB (SGD 149.00)

HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (SGD 109.00)

GPU - MSI GTX 760 2GB GDDR5 OC Twin Frozr Gaming (SGD 409.00)

Case - CoolerMaster CM690 III w/Window & USB3.0 (SGD 123.00)

PSU - Cooler Master Extreme 725W (SGD 85.00)

System Fans - CoolerMaster Excalibur 120mm Fan x 3 (SGD77.00)

OS - Microsoft Windows 8 OEM 64-bit (SGD130.00)

Total: SGD 1,719.00

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explanation for some of my choices as follows:

Motherboard - I'm also a Graphic Designer - my future plan is to purchase a Macbook Pro with a 128 or 256 SSD and would like to run HDD on this rig for RAID 1 in the future as an archive for my data. I would also need onboard capabilities for optical out and analog audio. There is a chance that I would run SLI for triple panel setup as well.

CPU Cooler - Some might think that this is redundant, but it's really hot here in Singapore (avg temperature about 26˚C to 28˚C).

PSU - This PSU is quite a bit more than I would need right now, but as I said, I might run SLI in the future thus a bigger PSU.

Extra System Fans - I want to keep my rig as cool as possible.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments on my rig would be really appreciated!

What does currency have to do with anything? I'm going off the prices he provided.

Trust me, I was seriously contemplating an MSI or ASUS but all those within my budget didn't have what I need for audio. Would there be any mobo you would recommend? This is my first step into the custom pc world so I'm half clueless as well! :)

Thanks for replying! Would you have any recommendation on this error that I made then?

I think the common consensus is that I made a really bad choice for my board. Perhaps some other models to start me off here?

For my budget wise I think 280x is a bit too much though. Thanks for your input I'll definitely put it in my list and do some adjustments.

Then why did you get a Z87 MOBO? Besides, its free performance. MOAR JIGAHURTZ

I wanted to do onboard RAID and proofing for SLI. If not I would have gone with a B series or H tops.

Is it possible you could get a cheaper board and add a sound card?

Would it be good if I got a lower end mobo and purchase a PCI RAID card instead when I actually do need it?

I was considering that option too. Sound cards are ridiculously expensive even for the cheapest option here though.

Would the ASUS H-87 Pro a better choice then? It's SGD209 compared to the ASrock which is 225. I'll have to give up on possibly doing SLI though, which is not a huge dealbreaker to me.

Ask ANYONE and they would say ANYTHING is more reliable then an Asrock...

Maybe not but you get the point right?

As for a build for you this is my thoughts :)

CPU: 4670 non K. Far better then the 4570 IMO :)

MOBO: Not my strongest area, but anything from ASUS or Gigabyte is a good game :) Msi is also good but they are a bit more meh... Asrock: Stay away from them!

CPU: Your current chosen one is great for the price :)

RAM: Great choice of RAM you got there ^^ The specs are what they should be so if you like the looks of them they are a go for sure.

Storage (HDD and SSD): Both are just what I would recommend myself although I would personally go for the 240Gb version of the EVO since the speed is lowered when going under that.

GPU: I would recommend you to either get ASUS DCU2 version of that GPU, the ASUS DCU2 version of the 280X or the DCU2 version of the 770 :) ASUS is the way to go ^^

Case: It is subjective so if it got the features you need, the price you want and the looks you like then go for it.

PSU: I love Corsair so I would personally go for the Corsair CX 750M (m for modular) here, but this depends on the price where you live.

OS: Whatever you want :)

This is just thoughts which I think is in your price range, but I don't know much about prices in Singapore so could you link us to the page you will be buying from?

Hope I helped and if there is anything else then just say the words :)

You should never SLI/crossfire low end cards so that is not a major con ;)

I considered the MSI but it didn't have optical out and ASUS is just too exp.

Right now I'm considering the ASUS H-87 Pro. Wouldn't be able to run SLI on this mobo though, but I don't think I would anyway. Just a tiny possibility.

Thanks buddy you're awesome :)

4670 non k seems like a great idea, considering it's 30 bucks more. From some comment, I would go for the 760 4GB as the other ones you suggested just goes out of my budget.

ASUS GPU - I did consider but most people told me it's overpriced so I was gonna go for GIGABYTE or MSI

Corsair stuff a little more expensive here I think. A mid tower here costs like 100 more extra than the CM case I'm gg for, but I think for PSU I would eventually go with Corsair haha

For the prices, it's local shops with their own price list and it's a pain in the ass to look at but if you want to, here you go mate! http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/priceLists

Thanks for everything!
