I think the most common application he uses is AIDA64. You could use the CPU-Z Benchmark test as well. There's also Prime95 and some other applications I can't remember off the top of my head.

 

Stress tests can cause premature wear on PC parts, especially if done at hours at a time with no adequate cooling for the parts under stress.

I was about to say AIDA64

"Make it future proof for some years at least, don't buy "only slightly better" stuff that gets outdated 1 year, that's throwing money away" @pipoawas

 

-Frequencies DON'T represent everything and in many cases that is true (referring to Individual CPU Clocks).

AIDA64 because he has the licence for it xD

Athlon X2 for only 27.31$   Best part lists at different price points   Windows 1.01 running natively on an Eee PC
