Buying Windows 10

Go to solution Solved by DrMacintosh,

Do not buy Windows 10 from Microsoft.

Windows 10 is a joke of an OS if you pay $100 for it.

https://www.kinguin.net/category/22175/windows-10-home-oem-key/

I have used them^ before and I can vouch for their legitimacy. Save yourself some money on the adware that is Windows 10.

So I'm in my final stages of getting my PC and I'm trying as much as possible to save money and as for the OS $80-100 for Windows 10 is a lot for me but the thing is I want Windows 10 for the feature of getting to join Xbox parties since most of my friends are on Xbox, but here is my question I'm trying to buy windows 10 from ebay since its like $5 for a key and If I do how would I install it on my new built PC. How would I enter the key without having a windows 10 stick?

My Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RvNkr7

Buy an 8gb minimum uxb stick

download the MS media creation tool for windows 10

it will create a bootble usb with a legit windows 10 on it.

Then install it.

You don't need a key to use Windows 10

some personalization features are disabled but other then that it all works

He's right.

If you get a key get a legit key from a authorized retailer.

I would rather pay the $100 and get a proper OS where I know it's guarantee to work, rather than buying from some digital bum who selling it from a back alley. And I don't have 10. Bought Win 8 for $70 bucks.

MS does some light policing on "keys" purchased from these dodgy hongkong webstores. At any point in time your computer will become deactivated. The way they sell just the key means you are not purchasing a license. You also have no idea how often they recycle their keys because you are not getting a proper license. no license = no legal right to use the software = piracy = you spending hours on the phone to MS customer service describing your derpiness. MS only gives deals on launch day. The margins their resellers get is only a few dollars so anything below $100 is going to be dodgy or stolen or recycled. Purchase at your own risk.

This is why I hate Windows 10, but I have to use it. Well at least until I Hackintosh this thing.

Activation is bull. (And Windows 10 certainly isn't worth $100) But i can see why they do it.

If you want to pay $100 USD for an OS like Windows 10, be my guest. I'm only trying to help.

There's no doubt it's really sketchy. I didn't personally get it from somewhere like kinguin but my friend that I helped build a pc for did, and the key came as a picture of one of those stickers that come on oem machines.

To me at least it looks like they're getting these keys from the product key stickers on old laptops and desktops. They're essentially reselling keys, like something like g2a, which is harmful to the developer (in this case Microsoft) and also gets into that sketchy territory. Where it's possible the product key you buy doesn't work.

Because, however, you can now run windows without a product key and just have a few negative side affects (can't change background, watermark on background, a few small things in stuff like settings saying windows in not activated) whereas with previous versions it would mean windows would stop working after 90 days these days what I usually do if someone is asking for Windows to be included in their PCPP list I tell them that they can either buy it from a legitimate source for $100, buy it from somewhere like kinguin for $30 or so (I mention that it is a bit sketchy though and also I usually recommend getting the buyer protection in case the key doesn't work), or I recommend them run windows without a product key. Some people are totally fine with a site like kinguin and go ahead and buy the key from there. Other people find it way to shady and whatnot so they either buy the full retail copy (usually $90 or so once you add in sales or MIRs) or just run windows without a product key.

There are reasons for and against all of the three options, so usually I just list all 3 (though if it's a budget build usually I highly recommend you not buy a retail copy since if you're building a $500 pc and spend $100 towards windows that's a looottttttt).

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
