the 7950 is the same price as the 760 which are around that budget you set. However the 7950 is a little more powerful but the 760 has some features like physx, shadowplay etc.

I'm totally fine with going AMD, but to be honest, I have zero knowledge about AMD cards. There was once a time I helped my friend install AMD video card driver, and it seems the AMD driver contain a lot of components(more than nvidia's) that I have no idea what they are for. On the other hand for Nvidia, if you don't use 3D, all you pretty much need to install from the driver are the driver itself, and PhysX for a stable clean installation.

Though I said this, but the Mantle thing from AMD that I heard about around the internet sounds amazing. Please enlighten me~

For around your price point, AMD would be the route to take....unless you are playing games that rely on PhysX and other Nvidia specific tech.  For the money, you can get 3Gb/386 bit vs. Nvidia 2GB/256 bit..if you are planning to run multi monitors, go with the 3GB flavor.  If you are staying at the 1080P single monitor level, the 2GB will do good for you.

AMD also has their 2GB/256 bit series (R9 270x formerly the 7800 series) for a decent price point (well under your 250 cap).  In the end it is entirely up to you and your personal preferences... PhysX and Shadowplay from Nvidia...or AMD savings and eventually Mantle...I know that you can spend hours beating your head against the wall about choosing a GPU so good luck and do your homework...you will come out ok in the end. :D

Go with the 7950. It's about a ~230% performance increase over the 560 Ti.

why not a R9 270x? it's a newer product (i think), and I only use a 1080 single monitor, tho.

I'd prefer a 760 to the 7950 simply for Shadowplay and PhysX.  The 7950 is faster though.

Because a 270x is a 7870.

The 7950 outperforms that by quite a bit.

lol wtf how about

NO.

I agree though, a 7950 is a decent choice. But the difference between a 7950 and a 560Ti (which is equivalent to a 470 or a 660) is about 28%.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

A 560 Ti is not equivalent to a 660...

Also, I used some bad wording. It's ~230% as powerful, not performance.

Regardless, if you had said 130% as powerful, it would be close to correct, instead of being outright false.

I don't know where you get your data from but I would LOVE to see it.

Also, Nvidia tier-downs cross generation (talking just the GPU die, VRAM excluded) is very consistent:

480 = 570 = 660Ti = 760

Then add a slight improvement to the newer card of about 5%~10%.

470 (actually a bit better than 560Ti) = 560Ti = 660 (about 10% improvement over 560Ti)

As with the 470, exceptions exist, but it is a rough universal truth of how Nvidia has been progressing since Fermi.

Core clock and architecture aren't all that's got to do with performance. Vram and memory bandwidth is important as well.

I never said anything about gaming performance specifically. In terms of power, the 7950 is much more powerful than a 560 Ti.

Universal truth...? That's some awkward assertion there.

The 560 Ti is closer to the 650 Ti BOOST than the 660 for performance.

so which 7950 will suggest? At newegg, I only found brands that I'm not familiar with.

Any dual/triple fan cooler--whichever is cheapest. they're all pretty similar.

If you want a really quiet card, go with the gigabyte windforce, sapphire dual-x/vapor-x, msi twin frozr, or asus dcu cooler.

Not sure about this one.  A GTX 760 is far more powerful than a GTX 480...
