Is this upgrade worth it?

Long post short:

I use my system for gaming and general internet use. I'm currently doing some upgrades, and I want it to last at least three more years before I need to do more upgrades.

Will my current i5-4690k continue to perform adequately for 3+ years?

Assuming I don't have money burning a hole in my pocket (because I don't), is the performance increase worth upgrading to an i7-4790k given the current prices I've seen on ebay and craigslist for a used 4790k running between $265-325?

Are there other used hardware/discount sites I can use?

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

If you feel like the i5 you have now is starting to be not enough then yes, the i7 4790k is OK upgrade if you can get it used for cheap.

Spending $300 is a no, no.

I'll be installing a GTX 1080 in a couple days.

I see that a 4690k is still a viable option. It's not gonna bottleneck your GPU, and you're not going to do video-editing rendering etc. I would say that a 4690k would perform well for the next 3 years.

You should honestly be fine with a 1080 and a 4690K for a while still. Maybe don't upgrade your cpu until games start to want more cores etc, then go to an i7. 1080 will pull its own weight in games pretty well.

It's fine for now, but I've thought about trying the Twitch thing. Maybe there's money out there for mediocre gamers...

Even with i7 it is a stretch for streaming. E-Sports games sure but that's about it.
