Hey guys,

I am preparing a gaming rig for myself and i've been struggling on determining what SSD and what storage capacity I would need.

First here is the build w/o the SSD:

CPU: Intel i7-7700k

GPU: Asus Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 ti OC

CPU cooler: NZXT Kraken x52

Case: Corsair Crystal 460x RGB

HDD: Seagate Barracude 2tb

Motherboard; Asus MAXIMUS IX FORMULA

PSU: Corsair HX750i

RAM: Corsair 16GB DDR4 Vengeance 3200MHz

Extra case fans: 3xRGB SP120 Corsair

Now I have been recommended a great number of SSDs and types of SSD. For what budget I have left i can not go over 300 USD (around 250 euros or so).

I have mainly been examining the following options:

- Samsung 960 EVO M.2 500GB

- Combination of Samsung 850 SATA III 500GB and 250GB (total of 750GB)

I do not really know which one is more worth it. After reading some forum posts ive been hearing that M.2 despite being faster is not always the best choice due to throttling as it heats up. On the other hand, I do not know if 500GB is enough to run my main OS and the higher requirement games of my Steam library.

I am also thinking about picking one of these two options from the start and then planning on spending more in the future.

- My motherboard has multiple M.2 ports, so I was considering getting either a second Samsung 960 EVO M.2 500GB, or adding a standard 850 Sata III

I am open to all recommendation and advice in this field and appreciate it all

I would lean towards the m.2 option, I personally have a setup very similar to this and have no issues. I have my windows OS and commonly used software on the m.2 and my games on the SSD, any crazy big games go on the HDD.

I'd go 960 EVO. Throttling was only on the 950 PRO and that was fixed with the 950 EVO.

This is a bad recommendation. NVMe SSDs don't improve boot or app launch times noticeably over sata SSDs, they're only useful for prosumers (and I'm pretty sure op isn't or they'd probably be leaning towards a 1700).

My vote would be the 250gb+500gb option.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

It would be for gaming and potentially streaming but thats it. Im not planning on creating or editing videos

In that case, I recommend the 850 evo option. You won't notice a difference in performance between it and a 960 evo, as evidenced by this.

whereas you will notice the larger space
