hyper threading

I have researched about the pentium G6951 and find out that you could pay extra for hyper threading. I've also find people saying that it works.

So it gives the cpu +1mb cache and makes it hyper threaded when  you insert the code you get from intel. If this is thru then intel and AMD has 

been *trolling* us, its like buying dlc to get more fps.

 

Is this possible to make it happen in other cpus? like an i5, because it's seems like this is only a programing change than hardware.

That pentium has the same silicon as an i3, so that code unlocks that extra silicon needed for the 1mb of cache and for ht to work.

And no, you can't do this with modern CPUs.

This only worked in the first place because intel purposefully crippled the chip.  Paying extra just unlocked the full potential it had all along.

 

An i5 is sadly perma locked with hyperthreading as (to my understanding) every chip in a generation is the same silicon and while all have the potential to be i7's the manufacturing process is rather volatile.

 

Meaning that a batch of say, 100 cpus you get a few that work perfectly, those are sold as i7's.  

 

Some more have corrupted cache or some other issue and are scrap.  

 

Some can't ht properly and become i5's.

 

Now, down to i3's.  1 or 2 of the cores are dead but the rest of the chip functions well so all but 2 cores are disabled and ht is active.  

 

Lowest tier, pentium/celeron.  These are chips that can't ht, have very poor cache and/or have basically nothing beyond 2 cores (and maybe ht)

I'm going to assume this was done long ago, and I'm going to assume they stopped doing this as people would just figure out how to unlock the chip for free
