The main difference is gsync only works with Nvidia GPUs and freesync works with AMD GPUs.  There are minor technical differences as well I believe but they accomplish basically the same thing.

Yes good point, freesync monitors tend to be cheaper and easier to find

Mostly the same thing.

G-sync = Nvidia version

FreeSync = AMD version

 

for everyday use, treat them as equals.

 

it's important to note that FreeSync, as the name kinda implies, is much cheaper/free for monitor manufacturers to implement, and G-sync uses a proprietary Nvidia board, so it's much more expensive to make G-sync monitors.

As others have said, they're for different GPUs.

 

Freesync is almost always a LOT cheaper than g sync. G sync is usually a little bit better, I think ghosting is a bit better and g sync also supports LFC on all monitors (Low Framerate Compensation, all the frame sync monitors have a range in which freesync or g sync works, if you drop below that frame rate g sync can double the frames up to make it still technically work but only freesync monitors with a 2.5x or more difference between the minimum freesync frame rate and max freesync frame rate support LFC). However amd is adding freesync support over hdmi to some monitors, whereas g sync only works with DP.

 

For the most part though, they're pretty much equals except freesync is WAYYYY cheaper. It's quite a compelling reason to get an amd GPU over an Nvidia one, imo.

in addition to the specifics mentioned earlier, I've also heard tell of G-sync working very marginally better in extreme situations compared to freesync. never really bothered to look into it myself, as you should use whichever sync you have the GPU for, but it would also make sense that the one which is massively more expensive (G-sync) is also better, no matter how slight. Apparently G-sync can work at a larger range of refresh rates, and has a better time adjusting on the go to great framerate dips as well as providing slightly lower input lag... the sort of differences you could likely measure, but probably wouldn't be able to notice or feel were you to directly compare the two in a head to head real world scenario.

But like I say, I've never really looked into it all that much... so don't take what I'm saying as law or anything. Can anyone confirm or deny what I've heard?

 

 

Also, HDMI 2.1 is, supposedly, going to natively support its own adaptive sync technology, so once we start seeing that pop up on GPU's, monitors, and supported cables, both of these other adaptive sync technologies would likely disappear quite quickly.
