Got a friend that's staring to make a YouTube channel.

Would like some opinions on software to make video for the channel.

If you could break it down for editing level, as in newb to expert. Also any that are free or have a trial version so he can try before he buys.

Gonna be used on a some what decent rig. 4790k, 980 sli and 1440p

DaVinci Resolve is good and free right now. As with most full fledged video editors, there is a learning curve to it, but it's not too difficult. It offers simple tools for getting started but can do a lot of what the big players like Premiere Pro can do but for free.

Sony Vegas? Not sure if it has a free trial though but my brother and I use it since forever.

Alternatively if he just wants to mess around why not the good and old Windows Movie Maker?

Blender has a decent video editing function that can be used for Youtube, there is also Lightworks. Both are free, but I believe that Lightworks only outputs up 720p unless you buy a license for it. Both of them have "How to" sections on their sites as well iirc.

There's a download button first thing on the front page for the software... https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/davinciresolve

Studio versions are paid, other two are free.

Blender has really steep learning curve since it works so differently from normal editors.

I've used Sony Vegas pretty extensively I would say starting out that would be good and I'm pretty sure theres a trial version of it.  You can surprisingly do alot with it and even install New Blue FX if you really got into it.  While I do think Premiere is better it also costs more in the long run with Adobe's subscription based model and it is in my mind a bit harder to use especially when just trying to simple functions like zooming in or cropping.

EDIT btw the new Vegas is actually called Magix Vegas 14 since Magix acquired Vegas from Sony they do still offer a trial version.
