Your 2 970s should defiantly hold up for a bit longer with today's games. I'd wait another year or 2.

I can see you're new to the forum, so welcome, and no, don't give your video cards to this guy:

xDxDxD You know I'm kidding, right? Besides, I'm getting a 980 Ti soon, so I don't really need more GPUs. If you want a 1080, just sell the 970s or give them to a friend who actually needs a GPU setup.

:$ Right on. Didn't notice he was new. Step one of forum usage: Don't send your old stuff to the first person who replies asking for it. They're probably being a bit of a rascally troll, and hopefully kidding. :D

not even worth it, if OP has the money a gtx 1080 would be much better, 3.5 gb VRAM can't exactly take advantage of the extra performance.

No. That's a side-grade, your two 970s will be approximately equivalent to one 1080. Now if you wanted two 1080s...

If everything scaled perfectly and didn't have <4 gb vram you would be correct...(although even if those were true it'd still be less powerful) But everything doesn't scale perfectly and it does have <4gb vram

It has =4GB, not <4gb, but the point is that it is a like for like switch. That 1080 costs about as much as two 970s together did at launch. It's not worth it.

Well half a gigabyte of that is slow so 90 percent of people do not count it... also it is a boost but if he wants maximum 1080ti

90 percent of people are idiots, frankly. Having used 970 SLI for around two years at 4K it really doesn't matter. I regularly used up to the full 4GB without impact.

I would agree that OP shouldn't upgrade to anything less than a 1080 Ti or equivalent for it to be worthwhile.

If it's a step up from a 1080, and makes sense for the money then why not?

I went from 970 sli to a single 1080 and let me tell you something, firestrike wise my 970s got a higher score by about 2k.

in games like battlefield 4 there was minimal to no difference in fps. However in games that didn't support sli well, there was a big gap.

half the people who talk trash about the 970s have never owned one but jump on the bandwagon, they have 4gb of vram not 3.5.

my 1080 cost me £630

my 970s combined cost only £490.
