So I am planning a ryzen uprade but am on a tight budget so cutting costs anywhere I can helps alot. So getting new RAM would be about 40 more than this set I found on ebay. It is DDR4, 2x8gb, 2400. But I have heard of compatibility issues with Ryzen and speed yadayadayada so if you could I would appreciate you explaining that. Go for it.

Ryzen has a few memory issues. I don't know all of them, but there's the rank, B-die, and IF issues that they have to iron out.

How much does it improve from faster RAM though... its 2400 and idk if I'd be able to OC it without a heatsink, etc (I dont really know how RAM works lol) [yes I know it looks ugly but I could care less for 40 dollars in my pocket]

it will run at 2400 no problem. OC'ing is tricky

RAM rarely/almost never overheats, and @MageTank runs 1.7v on his kit of RAM with no heatsink, and it hasn't died yet. he can probably say more about RAM temperatures (and anything about RAM for that matter) than me.

depending on how long you spend OC'ing, how much voltage you pump into the RAM sticks, and how much AMD improves RAM compatibility, you might be able to get anywhere from no OC at all, to 3000Mhz. nobody knows.

It's RAM... It uses like 3W compared to your CPU's >60W. I'd take the 2400 over the 2133MHz any day. You don't need to overclock it manually, just activate XMP (whatever AMD calls it) and verify that it's running at 2400MHz via Windows and the BIOS/UEFI.

As for improvements, I can't tell you. I've used kits on Haswell, FX, and down for testing my hypotheses but you'll have to search Youtube, Userbenchmark, or Google for Ryzen results.

xmp basically is allowing ram to oc to a higher mhz

the difference betwenn 2400 and 2800 is about 1-2%

was that tested with Ryzen though?

Ryzen sees lots of improvement with higher RAM speeds, since it increases infinity fabric speed.

XMP is basically a pre-set overclock. it's basically the RAM stick telling the motherboard exactly how to overclock itself to get the rated speed.

you can OC a stick with no XMP profile, it just means that you will have to do it youself.

also XMP profiles are dogshit on Ryzen, since they were tested with intel platforms.

You should be very careful when spreading information like this. I run 1.7v on DDR3 without a heatsink, not DDR4. I avoid going above 1.4v on DDR4 whenever possible unless I have good airflow in the case. While ram itself seldom overheats in the traditional sense, it's stability at higher overclocks is still very dependent on thermals.

That kit will work, and you may be able to OC it some, but understand, it's a single rank kit, which means you will be lacking the advantage of rank interleaving. I can't tell from the picture (someone with better eyes might be able to clarify for me) but it looks like it's using Hynix AFR IC's. You should be able to OC them to about 2800-3000 depending on your motherboard. You will almost certainly need the newer AGESA update for Ryzen so that you can tweak tertiary timings to tolerate those IC's easier.

I understand the need to save money, and memory for the most part is an easier way to save money, but you have to be careful when doing so on Ryzen. Faster memory does show a great improvement in minimum framerates on Intel, but for Ryzen, it's an entirely different story. Never before have I seen ram impact average framerates to such a drastic degree. Cheaping out on ram, and then not having the patience to properly OC a weaker kit, might end up with a serious performance deficit. Just keep that in mind.

It's cheap, but it will get the job done. It still supports memory overclocking, and my friend has it for his 6 core Ryzen CPU. He enjoys it for what it offers as far as features go.

It also received the latest AGESA 1.0.0.6 update, which means your chances of manually overclocking that cheap kit of ram to something decent, is very real. All in all, a very decent motherboard for it's price.

If it did somehow get fried would it also ruin my motherboard?  Or would it shut down if they got too hot like a couple (unless you oc  and cou to 10 ghz) This might be a dumb question but I'm just bring precautious. Thanks for all of your help!

If what got fried? Your CPU or ram? You won't be frying your CPU, as these chips only hit around 3.8-4ghz (if lucky). As for ram VRM, I can't tell how strong it is just by looking at it, but as long as you show restraint, you will be fine. Avoid going beyond 1.4v VDIMM, and keep your VCCIO/SA voltages within reasonable amounts, and nothing bad will happen. I am going to the store today to pick up a Ryzen CPU and motherboard to finish my memory overclocking guide, so I'll let you know what I discover and try to assist you in any way I can.

Thank you, you are being more than helpful since I know literally nothing about ram, and I just looked up some videos and even if I can only hit like 2666 it won't matter that much with a 1060/ 1070 (I have r9 390, about RX 480 level) especially since I play at 2560x1440
