Because I'm too cheap to buy a good one, and too lazy to wait for a cheap one to arrive from Hong Kong

So use your jank setup for now, but order an extension cable and it will arrive whenever, than you're good to go :)

Why not replace the PSU?

Sounds like the best option. Do I just jumper the 24pin, plug the PSU into the graphics card and wall power and turn it on, or is there anything else I need to set up to do it safely?

yeah pretty much.

just so you know, it's probably more jank then what you're going to do (looks better tho), but you can get a SATA Power > Molex adapter, and a Molex > 6-pin adapter. it will deliver less wattage than a 6-pin is rated for, but usually, GPUs don't draw the actual rated power from the connector anyway.

what GPU

I was considering just getting a double molex to 6pin adapter for like $4 from China, but it would take like 2 weeks to arrive. I'll probably end up doing either that or 24pin extension, but right now, jank setup seems like the best option. My GPU is a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870, just got it to replace my 3870, without checking how many 6pins it needed.
