Usb C laptop charger - Adapter?

Hi

 

I have recently acquired a laptop battery pack.

I also have a USB-C enabled laptop I would like to charge.

Now I wondered.

There is no USB-C cable included in the box, but I can set the voltage on the charger manually up to 20V.
If I would solder a USB-C connection and set it to 20V, would it charge?

 

I know USB-C uses a communication protocol to "negotiate" the charge specs.

And I'm afraid to fry my components.

Would this work in the "old-dumb-way" too? Or will I damage stuff?

 

Alternatively, is there a circuit that can accept 12V-20V (no matter what for me) and communicate with the USB-C chip to negotiate the specs?

This would help me out a lot

You cannot simply apply 20v to the USB c power pins and expect your laptop to charge. I'm not entirely sure if you would fry anything, but better not find out by trying. As for actually doing this project, just get an already made power bank. As far as I've searched the web, evaluation boards for USB C charging are not exactly easy to get. And unless you are willing to deal with QFN packages, making one is pretty much out of the way. The negotiating part I believe is from the resistances of certain pins.

 

I wouldn't just shove 20V in a USB Type C port, even though it says it can accept it. You don't know what is going on after the port. It may, by default, route it to a 5V line and well, plugging 20V into that would release the magic smoke.

Oh and by the way, the variant of type C that you need for high power transfer is called "USB type C DP"

That's what I experienced too...

I'll probably just get a new battery bank then...

From what I understand it's with actual logic involved and multiple stages.

It was simply with a few resistors with normal USB ports...
