So I am moving very soon and my next room is going to be quite a bit bigger than what I have right now. I want it to be good/decent for audio.

This is the layout of the room, the sofa might become two chairs. The ceiling is a rough wood ceiling.

I don't really want to do foam because that might take down some wallpaper once I take it down and therefore ruin the walls.

I was thinking about getting some heavy thick curtains, but some people say they don't work.

my budget eh, I guess 1000€ should be enough to get good/decent acoustics.

Any ideas?

Couple of book cases, I never liked acoustic tiles since they looked like shit and annoyed some of my more pretentious clients back in my studio days. Canvas prints with poly insulation cut and stuffed in the back, hang em like picture frames.

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige

I think it depends what your goal is. Book cases like mentioned above would provide diffusion. Absorption requires other properties. Heavy, thick curtains would likely attenuate only the very highest of frequencies. DIY acoustic treatment can look nice if you spend time on it. Rock wool is commonly used but lower frequencies remain a problem.

I would suggest reading something like this to begin: http://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advice/beginners-guide-acoustic-treatment

...and then continue reading and learning if you require more.

It depends on how you want to make it sound.

I want to get rid of reverberations as much as I can. I want the sound to basically bounce of as few things as it can, but I also don't want to go full in and make my new room into a perfect audio box with different types of foam and such everywhere, because I don't like the look of it and I will only be there for the next 4-5 years.

If you can afford it, build or buy acoustic panels like those sold by GIK acoustifs or ATS - wood frame around rock wool filling with textile shell. Looks better and can be hung on a picture hook. Easily patched when you move out. The panels are also more effective than foam or curtains and more durable.

An hour ago I found these https://www.thomann.de/dk/eq_acoustics_spectrum_studio_tile_50l_grey.htm?ref=prod_rel_252515_1 They are said to be for mids and highs, but not that good for bass, they also have a bass version of it. I was thinking maybe a set the mid and treble version behind my table and then a set behind the sofa. I am not sure if it would be worth getting bass traps, maybe a set of Hofa Basstrap baby in the corners in the back of the room, since I then also would be able to use them as a small table :D

I would treat first reflection points on the sidewalls, ceiling if possible, and the back wall if it is less than 10 feet behind you.

Bass is difficult to control without huge and extensive trapping so I would worry about that only if it is a problem.

the ceiling is not going to be treated, it would simply be too much of a pain in the ass, plus the type of ceiling is among the "better" ones for audio, without it being treated. I have had an audio engineer (he is a friend) out and look at it, he said it was about as good as it gets without treating it.

Yeah, the bass is a tricky beast if I wanted to control it then I would pretty much have to fill all the corners with bass traps, plus the placement of my sub is going to be weird. Maybe it will be beside the door or under the window or in the back of the room.

Also, this guy pretty much makes the same panel as the ones you recommended, right? Those would quite a bit cheaper.

When I sit at the desk the back wall will be about 10 feet away from me, while just under 1 feet when I sit on the sofa, so the back wall is defiantly going to be treated.

This is maybe the layout of how I would treat it. The red is the acoustic panels and then the red + round is the little bass traps (can use them as a small table for the sofa :D) The gray boxes are my speakers. The closet might not be there, so if it isn't there then I will also have an acoustic panel over there. The window will have a heavy curtain over it.

Not sure how bundled up towels would compare to rockwool. Like most DIY treatments, they may only be effective over a limited frequency range.

Note that it is perfectly possible to DIY proper acoustic panels. There are of course tutorials online.
