I tried upgrading my Intel Pentium E2180 on my Asus P5Q SE motherboard to a Core 2 Quad Q8200 and it won't post. I have tried switching the ram slots and removing the CMOS battery but that did nothing. Any suggestions?

Specs:

Asus P5Q SE motherboard

2 x 2GB DDR2 800MHz RAM

AMD Radeon HD 7870 Video Card

Hyper 212 LED Heatsink

Thermaltake TR2 600W Power Supply

WD 500GB HDD

Seagate 200GB HDD

Super Talent 64GB SSD

I assume it posts with the old CPU so if it does with the old cpu and not with the new one it is either the CPU itself or the BIOS.

I would try to update the bios with the old chip installed and try if it does post then.

You would think Ubisoft would support the Bulldozer based architectures more given their digging themed names like bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator.

Which bios does the mobo run? the Q8200 is only supported from bios version 0405.

I updated it to the latest version not too long ago. I think that update was released in 2009.

According to the manufacturer's website, it is version 1005.

It does start up but just doens't display anything? You might have the Speaker from that motherboard lying around? Could be useful as it could give you a couple beeps and tell you what's wrong.

use one ram slot

Ok, I just tried booting with one ram slot with the E2180 and I got here are the beeps (If I remember correctly):

1. long beep

2. two short beeps

3. two short beeps

That's Hardware failure. :( Maybe Mobo failure? Check the pins

I just tried again and it posted with the E2180 just fine, but with the Q8200 it didn't post. I tried it in another motherboard and it was working fine. There is one broken pin on the motherboard, but if that is really the case then the E2180 shouldn't work either.

No beeps with the Q8200, it starts up then after 5 seconds shuts off automatically, then is starts up again and does nothing.

The broken pin could explain it. The E2180 is a different CPU and the Q8200 might have some important PCI-e lanes running on that where the E2180 has some useless stuff.

why not use the P5QL-VM EPU mobo?

Well, the motherboard I bought today was originally going to be for my dad's system since the case it would go in only supports microATX motherboards. The P5Q SE is a larger motherboard and the case for my system supports it.

Anyway, I think I will end up using the P5QL-VM motherboard. I'll try and sell the Pentium and p5q se in a bundle and buy another microATX motherboard.

Thank you for your help @Nerdslayer1 and @Arcanekitten
