Best Ryzen 5 CPU for gaming on 1070

Hello guys. I originally thought about upgrading my i3 rig to a Haswell i7, but problems on it kinda decided me on starting fresh. So I'm looking for the cheapest Ryzen CPU to drive a 1070 without bottleneck, for gaming in 1440p@60fps and light content creation.

But there's bonus conditions:

- The idea is to buy a mid-range Ryzen now and upgrade to a high-range Ryzen when AMD reaches 10nm/7nm chips later.

- I'm very concerned about efficiency and power consumption (energy isn't cheap where I live) so if there's a more efficient CPU that's just a little more expensive, that's for me

- I'm expecting compatibility of the AM4 platform with next-gen CPU, but if that likely not the case, I'm dropping this idea.

cheapest upgrade would be a 4790k, and its still one of the best single threaded cpus on the market.

R5 1600 is only 65W tdp, any unlocked i7 will have 95w tdp.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

That was my original idea but I have some minor problems on my rig (sound card, USB, temps). I figured I'd see for how much I can sell it and search advice for something new

95W assumes you'll overclock it for Intel and AMD's measurement of TDP is at base.

*personal experience*

My 6700K always claims a power usage of 95W whether its on 4.6Ghz or 3Ghz

I don't have the capacity to overclock an Intel CPU in my current rig. Ventilation is tight :(

I see. Then your best bet would be to go Ryzen 1600. Just make sure to get fast RAM and stick to the stock cooler to save cash.

To clarify, if an i7 Haswell is ok for gaming without o.c. I'm gonna see if I can sell my current rig to buy a Ryzen one. If I CAN'T sell it at a good price, I'm gonna go with an i7-4790+GTX 1070 in my current rig. But I'd prefere starting fresh to remove those small issues I currently have.

I couldn't really care about the overclocking, but the USB and sound card issue would break a board for me.

I mean, those are just minor issues: I can't plug in more than one USB peripheral in the front IO (despite having 4 ports), the sound card sometimes isn't functionning at boot (and can't use front IO jack), but the main issues are thermals and noise. This baby isn't build to handle old GPUs at full load.

The fact is that I built this rig wanting something compact because I move a lot and sometimes want to bring the computer to a friend, but now I just use my laptop for that and don't have the need for something that compact.
