980 in SLI VS 1080ti

Hey Gang,

 

I'm deliberating over whether I should stick with my two 980s or move over to a single 1080ti with looking to getting another one in a couple months time.

 

What do you guys think? Should I stay with what I've got now or go with my greedy consumer gut and splash out on the 1080ti but with perhaps little to no increase in performance.

if you are fine with your current preformance you can definatly hold out for Vega and Volta

A GTX 1070 in SLI is around the performance of a 1080 Ti (a bit faster on games that supports it)

And a 1070 is around a 980 Ti too

Frankly I would say you have enough horse power to wait for the GTX 2080 Volta which will be faster and cheaper than the 1080ti is today.

Of course single powerful gpu is better but u are okay with your single 980 for now if u want to sli your 980 i prefer just to buy 1080ti and sell your 980 besides its an old gpu.

If you read it correctly he/she said they already have two 980s, they didn't say they might get another 980.

 

980 sli is supposed to be around 1080 performance (I think) when sli is working well, personally I would get the 1080ti, because games that don't support sli you don't get any to little gains.

980 SLI=1080, so the 1080 Ti is 20-25% more powerful. Stick with the 980 SLI tho, it's more than enough

Because I am too cheap to buy a good cooler  It gets the job done for now, but I will probably upgrade to X299 or Ryzen/Threadripper, so this time around I am going to get a good cooler

980 sli struggles to outperform a 1080

Just look at every other past generation, the 980 was cheaper than the 780ti considering release prices, same with 980ti to the 1080 and most likely will be the 2080 and 1080ti.

 

If nVidia didn't do it this way then there would be even less of a reason to upgrade and we'd have a lot more people still rocking Kepler and Maxwell cards around.

Defintley cheaper. NVidia have some shady business tactics, but they haven't been dissapointing at ALL with performance gains in the last few years. The trend seems to be 70 series cards = 80Ti cards, so the 2080 will likely beat out the 1080ti and be around the same price or a little cheaper.

I personally would sell those 980's and get a 1080ti. The 1080ti is awesome. It's a shame but gaming seems to be moving even further away from SLI as we move forward in time. Few games support it. The ones that do don't scale as well as they should. 

 

The 1080ti is absolutely incredible. If you can't sell your 980's then it's def just up to you financially what you wanna do. But I recently built a new rig and considered either SLI 1080's or a single 1080ti, and I went with the single 1080ti not because of price. I just have zero faith in SLI due to lack of support

Lol not sure where people are seeing a 1080 = 980 sli. 1080 is weak af.  

 

Id stick with the 980's until the next series plagued with hype and issues.
