Hey guys, I overclocked my FX-8350 to 4.3ghz. It was running pretty good with 30-40 degrees idle and 60 degrees max under load. (Was running about 30 degrees idle and 60ish on default volts and other stuff too) So I ran a Prime 95 test for around 10 hours and there were no problems. I turned the PC off and went shopping. I got home and turned it on to do some photo editing. It wouldn't start, it'd start up stop start up stop etc etc. Then the Corsair H110i i use as the cooler turned into a jet engine and the failed to boot screen came up. I entered the bios and just decided to load optimized defaults.

From there the CPU is now idling at 60 - 70 degrees??? AT STOCK BIOS SETTINGS. What?? The CPU cooler is pushing out some pretty hot air and at one point it just turned off. After starting it back up it's idling at the same 60-70 degrees and then it started thermal throttling to 1.4ghz, at 1.4ghz it sat at around 20-30 degrees idle and when i tried running a game it just shot up to 80 and shut down.

I really can't afford the repairs as I'm a photographer and money is fairly tight.

Here are the specs
CPU: AMD FX-8350
GPU: R9 280X
Mobo: Gigabyte 970A-D3P
RAM: 8GB Ripjaws X DDR3
PSU: CM V750 Gold
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i
Case: Zalman Z11+

Cheers.

Perhaps. Prime95 rips your CPU to shreds, I did an extended test on a sub-system I no longer have and it broke the sensor temperatures. Don't use prime95.

What I can say is, when I ran Prime95 on my main rig, it appeared to get ridiculously high temps (idling at 30-40 which is alot on water) - but to my surprised I just dusted my radiator and now I idle at 19-23 degrees.

If you've undone the overclock, just make sure it's not on Auto voltage. Push the voltage as low as possible, dust your PC thoroughly (especially the radiator) and turn it off for 12 hours or so.

Running Prime95 for that long seems extremely excessive, and unwise.

Have you tried reapplying the thermal paste? Is the cooler working properly?

It was idling at the said temps pre Prime 95 run and I will dust off my radiator etc again now.

You sure it is not your motherboard VRM being overloaded?

How do I know if that's whats happening?

It probably was and the cooler is working properly.

Dusting it off won't do anything. You'd likely need to check the thermal compound.
