Very Very Confused

pjsmith727

So, built my own system, blah blah blah, now we are here. I upgraded today, or so I thought, by moving from an EVGA 4gb 960 in the small form factor to a full sized XFX GTR Black Edition 8gb 480. And then my average fps in mincraft dropped by 20fps on average (33-40% lower frames). What the actual fuck. But then I run Time Spy and score just under 4300 (4299 was exact score lol) Is there any settings I should be changing or what because I'm literally shocked. Before anyone breaks into the whole, "why the fuck do you have a 480 for minecraft, I sold my 960 for 120$ and my friend sold me his second 480 for 180 because his phone bill was way too high this month. can Anyone fill me in as to why my system is preforming like shit?

Specs:

6600k @4.7ghz (4702mhz was max recorded in timespy)

msi z170a pro mobo

hyper 212 cooler

Corsair ax860i psu

Inwin 303 with 6 case fans (cooling shouldnt be an issue)

*Used DDU through integrated Graphics

The RX480 sucks in LWJGL games (like minecraft). The only place they really shine is in Vulkan games. I'm using my EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SSC and it treats me just fine. Stick to nvidia.

To be fair, the 480 is faster across the board http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-960-vs-AMD-RX-480/3165vs3634, so there really shouldn't be a -20 fps difference in minecraft.

When in doubt, reinstall windows

I had an RX480, and it sucked. I got similar results to the OP. OP, don't waste your time reinstalling windows.

Minecraft is mostly a CPU depended on games, OP has another issue.

you are being biased, i am assuming you never owned a rx480.

vary biast advice, stick to whatever is better for the price range, rx480 beats a 1060 in terms of performance, comparing a gtx 960 to a rx480 is a bit unfair.

reinstall windows, something else is wrong with your system.

It's not a Windows problem, it's a hardware issue. It's funny how he gets problems RIGHT AFTER installing a new card.

Why would I claim that I owned an RX480 if I didn't? It excelled at Vulkan games, I'll give it that, but it didn't work well in OpenGL and DX11/12 titles.

LWJGL uses OpenGL to render graphics. The CPU doesn't do that, the GPU does.

...could be a software issue or a defect.

so you downgraded from a rx480 to a 960?

Sadly, that's not the issue. Minecraft is built on OpenGL.

considering it can run modded Minecraft, it shouldn't have issues with vanilla.

That's very unlikely.

No, I was upgrading to an RX480.

Are these shaders running on OpenGL?
I was getting about 50FPS on my RX480 with an i7-6700k.

My 480 has beat my friends 960 in every game including minecraft. It does fine in those titles

yes, this is open GL graphic API that uses for shaders mod.

lol, rebooting is always first thing you should do if you run into issues like this, can save a lot of time and headache.

Hilarious. You don't actually know if this is running in OpenGL, you copied part of "dauxanh 64"s comment from that YouTube video.

I think he's implying he had a 960, purchased a 480 intending it to be an upgrade (it should be), somehow got worse performance, so swapped back to his 960. That's not that hard to understand lol
