GTX 1080 bottle necked?

I have an aging X79 based system paired with a GTX 1080, my CPU is a 3.5GHz Xeon (E5 2690) that I know holds the card back but I am wondering if it is worth upgrading to Ivy Bridge-E and getting something like a i7 4960x or should I just go to x99 or x299?

Well you can check the CPU/GPU usage while gaming n stuff with MSI Afterburner.
That will be the best way to decide if its bottlenecking or not.

An overclocked 4930K/4960X should be fine. If you want to get an X99 system, look for used parts, you should be able to get some pretty good deals ;)

Although, if all you want is good gaming performance, just get a 7700K as it is the best gaming CPU you can buy right now or if you are budget constrained, consider the R5 1600.

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32

Do you need a new CPU?
Or is it just a question of you're not beeing sure if you want one or not...

In any case, make sure you're actually gaining anything with a new CPU.
If you already reach 60 FPS in all games you play, (if you're gaming) then you probably don't need a new CPU anyway... ;)

I don't think the ryzen cpus are the best choice for strictly gaming? But I don't mind being proven wrong.

Yeah but the other big factor is that i have an asus Rampage iv Black edition that i dont really want to part with. im just wondering if a 4960x would bottleneck my gtx 1080.

At 4.0+GHz, it won't bottleneck your 1080 ;)

They aren't, but the Ryzen 5 1600 is the best CPU for $230 :D

It's good start with this information xD. Processor load on 1080p and 4k is not the same, when you compare the amount of cores, etc.

At 4K the cpu shouldn't be the bottle neck. If you are only gaming then the 7700k is the best bet. If you wanna stream or edit photos or videos then ryzen is the best bet

Great, I kinda want to get a stupid cpu TBH. i was originally thinking about getting an E5 2687w V2 8 core and pushing it to 4.3GHz, its also Ive Bridge-E but it would slap a 1800x around all day
