So, does disk defragmenter work for trimming SSDs for Windows 7 or is there a different way that it's supposed to be done?

Under Windows 7, Disk Defragmenter panel will not execute TRIM when you hit the defrag button. It will actually defrag it.

Microsoft says that during the OS scheduled maintenance, it will detect that you have an SSD and execute TRIM.

Disk Defragmenter was renamed to Optimize Drive under Windows 8 and 10, where now, it detects SSDs, and when you pick one, and hit "Optimize" (there is no Defragment button), it will execute TRIM manually.

Don't defrag your SSD drive, it's not made for that.

TRIM needs to be enabled in Win7 - usually there's some software you can install with your SSD that gives you diagnostic info, like health etc.

What brand of SSD is it?

Just leave your SSD alone, windows does everything it needs to.
