Computer not booting unless F key is pressed

Hello everyone!

I've had this problem ever since I installed a new GTX 970 onto my PC last year.

Basically, my PC won't boot unless I press f5 or f6 or f7 or f8 in the first few seconds during the splash logo. I have an HP desktop of which I upgraded it's graphics card and I think the problem comes from the motherboard not "liking" the new graphics card and the "f keys" working as an ignore button. When I press one of the mentioned keys while booting, the PC boots and works flawlessly and that's how I've been using my PC ever since I upgraded. Now that my PC is getting a little "old" for me, I'm looking to sell it, but I have to fix this problem or else no one's going to buy my PC.

I'll give you guys some info on the Motherboard and GPU in the imgur link:

What I think is causing the problem is the fact the motherboard is discontinued and the graphics card is newer than the motherboard, causing a conflict where the motherboard doesn't understand what the new hardware is. I think this is going on because when I install my old graphics card (it was an nVidia 545), it boots without problem.

Here's what happens when I don't press the button:

HP splash screen appears.

PC beeps 1 time, about 10 secs later it beeps again 1 time, and 20 secs later beeps again. After the last beep, it goes into a screen similar to that of picture 3, basically a black screen with a blinking underscore and it stays like that forever.

Here's what happens when I press the button:

HP splash screen appears.

I press one of the f keys (5 or 6 or 7 or 8)

Screen changes to a black screen with information about the cpu and ram and their respective frequencies.

PC beeps 1 time, about 10 secs later it beeps again 1 time, and 20 secs later beeps again. After the last beep, it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore for one second and boots windows normally.

Basically, I have to wait about 30 seconds in the BIOS in order for the PC to boot everytime, and I have to press one of the previously mentioned f keys in order for it to boot after the last beep.

Thank you for reading, any help would be very much apreciated!

Try seeing if there's a BIOS update for your computer from the PC manufacturer's website.

Try another thing: go through the BIOS, and make sure that the settings aren't set to boot from the iGPU (if there is one).

Drivers may... I don't know? Many bloatware or the card is not inserted properly?

It's not drivers as the graphics card works flawlessly when Windows is booted.

If you're talking about motherboard drivers, the motherboard is discontinued for all I know, I've been to the HP page and I can't find anything on it. I can give you guys the original model of the HP desktop: p6-2109ep

Does your BIOS have an option to "ignore" errors on boot? It sounds like there's some sort of POST error and you need to press a function key to continue.

One thing I've noticed is I can't even get into the BIOS options without having to reinstall my old graphics card back. The options menu doesn't even show up with the new card.

I don't think there was an iGPU option in the BIOS last time I checked. I remember that the BIOS was very barebones.

No warning whatsoever. I just found out by seaching on some HP forums that if I pressed one of the previously mentioned F keys, it would indeed boot after waiting.

I might add that I've cleared the CMOS after I installed the card last year to no avail.

Unfortunately, there it is not enough information to determine your problem

This probably just BIOS setting issue, but no one knows what setting you've set

Yeah, I installed that update back when I first found this problem but as you can probably guess, the GTX 970 came out way after August 14, 2012, meaning the BIOS configuration has no idea what a "GTX 970" is. I think that's where the problem incides but I have no idea how to fix it, if any of you have had problems with motherboards then it would help.

The workaround that I found was in this youtube video:

This is how I've been powering on my PC ever since I upgraded it.
