Okay. I currently have an FX 6300, on an Asus Sabertooth 990fx r2.0 board.
I have a Corsair H50 and my PSU is a pretty terrible 500w 80+ unit from EVGA.
On my system i play alot of high end games (GTA, Witcher, Tomb Raider, the likes) and i also edit music. The music editing is very important, my project files have alot of simultaneous tracks with multiple effects on each. Its very intensive and i do alot of it

This processor is starting to show its age, and im looking for my best options when it comes to upgrading.

I WANT to upgrade to Ryzen at some point, and i understand that Intel Kaby Lake would be a decent route to go financially, i have considered it.

BUT. For the sake of this thread, im looking solely for the best options on AM3+ socket, without buying a new motherboard.

I had my eyes on the 8350 for a while, but i also know AMD has the 9590. I've heard alot of bad things about it, and i notice its TDP is pretty high.
I dont necessarily want to know if the 8350 is more worth it than the 9590, because currently the prices are about the same. (8350 for $121, 9590 for $130)
On the product page for my board, on Asus site, it shows official support for 9xxx

What should i do.

I am very willing to upgrade my PSU and cooling with this upgrade as both need upgrading anyway. I was looking at the H75 as i want to stay liquid, and the EVGA Supernova 750w Gold. These should be able to handle the 9590, no?
I've seen that the 9xxx series is the 8xxx series with higher clocks. So what if i just got a 9xxx series and left it stock? wouldn't that be better for lifespan/stability?

AMD R5 1600 @ 3.6 GHz // 2x8GB Corsair LPX 3200MHz // Gigabyte Windforce OC 1060 6GB @ 2100MHz // Corsair RMx 650 // Crucial 275GB + Seagate 2TB 7200RPM // NZXT S340 Elite

9590 is basically a factory overclocked 8350. If they're the same price, why not I guess.

Look, nothing you will buy on AM3+ will be an upgrade from the FX6300.

Don't waste your money on FX 8000/9000.

Even the currently cheapest Ryzen R5 1400 will be an upgrade to the FX 8000 as the difference in performance is that big. Personally, I would recommend to avoid the R5 1400 and jump straight to the R5 1500X as it has way better cooler, more cache and higher base clocks.

If you can hold on for a bit and save enough money then the R5 1600 would be the best route for you.

Rather than wasting the $130 you have now on the cpu, and then extra for a cooler, just save up until you can afford a ryzen 1600, cheap-ish mobo and 8gb ram.

I already have 8GB of ram, im trying to get hands on a 16GB 1866 kit soon. But for the sake of this argument, i want to assume no motherboard swap. I have everything else considered, im trying to figure out my options on AM3+ alone.

For the price none of them are really worth it honestly, the money is better saved until you can upgrade to a new platform.

In my case in particular, money comes around rather slowly. I understand its more worth it for the performance gain, but i want to consider this option first. Because i want to completely rebuild on Ryzen, top of the line everything with a budget of like $3000, but that comes later. I want to squeeze everything out of this PC that i can for as long as i can, until i come into serious money for a rebuild

a 9590 doubles as a heater as well. if you live somewhere with a harsh winter it is a viable choice

otherwise, this socket is pretty much done for. I know that you want to consider AM3+ CPU to save money, but what you saved here will soon be lost in the form of power bill.

The higher power consumption of 9590 will soon remove any cost advantage you have for not going Ryzen. If you are saving for a new build soon then I'd suggest sticking with your current chip for a little longer

Thats not to mention with the Ryzen option you can sell your mobo and ram, which would probably make up for most of the $100 difference.

Basically, you can go the 9590 route or pay $50 more and get 20% better multi threaded performance, and 25% or so better single threaded performance, and have a better future upgrade path.

I understand. But i dont want to half-ass my Ryzen build. When i rebuild i want to get everything in one go, i dont want to settle for parts that i'll want to upgrade again later. I want an R7 1700 and an NZXTx52, thatll require not only new motherboard, but new case in my situation. Itll also require OS reinstall, and i want to upgrade to SSD so i might as well wait until i can afford that SSD to reinstall OS only once.

Point: i dont want to replace parts more times than i have to

It may not be that good for the 9590 at stock voltages.

If what you want is a bit more life out of your current AM3+ PC, forget about changing cooler, changing PSU (???), changing anything. Get the cheapest used 8-core Piledriver CPU (83xx, 9xxx) you can find and then fine tune the clock/voltage to best your remaining parts can handle. You should not reach $100 for such CPU in the used market, more like $50-80 depending on the exact model, whether they include the stock heatsink, etc (but you don't care about any of it, so ignore anything that is not the cheapest.

And then of course sell your 6300. The net  cost of the upgrade will be in a couple tens at that point, and you can probably get an 8x4.3-4.4GHz out of it without compromising your saving for your future build.

Honestly, go for an 8350/70 and overclock it, they are either better binned or more energy efficient in most cases then the 9XXX variant, even if the FX9XXX chips supposedly come with transistors that at high frequencies should decrease tdp by "10%".

The chances are very low, if you end up being lucky enough to get an energy efficient FX9590, yes it would work out, but those are very rare, and for most they need at least a 240mm rad to keep up with the cooling. So going back to the FX8350/70 depending on how energy efficient the cpu is, an H75 could keep up with an overclock from 4.4Ghz to 4.7Ghz.

EDIT: @SpaceGhostC2Calso makes some pretty nice arguments as well, his advice is a lot better cost efficiency wise, while mine focuses more on getting the most out of what you can equip, while costs taking a second seat.

This is the kind of advice i was after, thank you to you and to @SpaceGhostC2C
