SSD worth it or no?

jamesfindlay3

Hi at the moment with my build I am going with the standard SSD and hard drive config (1tb wd blue and 250gb samsung ssd) my build in total without peripherals and software is around $1000 it is a fairly budget build but only because i don't really need or want huge high end parts a 1080p monitor an i5 and a 1060 is enough for me. So the budget has never really been a problem but it is always good to keep it low. So I want a really fast machine that will load everything really fast and boot really fast. So is it worth going for a 1tb ssd or not. Feel free to suggest other options and thanks a lot!

Would defiantly recommend an SSD, much faster boot time and overall system responsiveness (No need for 1Tb though, only need to put frequently used programs on it). Also get R5 instead of an i5.

I'm with you on that one. Don't need 1TB SSD, as loading times only improve by like 2-3 seconds when they're installed on the SSD.

R5? I would have said the i5.

Ok then that sounds good I didn't realise it would affect the whole system and yeah I am waiting to see how the new intel CPU's fare compared to the ryzen but it may definitely be something I change too. Thanks!

R5 has better frame times, minimums and 1% lows for gaming (Trades in averages), also would crush the i5 in multi threaded tasks (Will be more useful in games in the future also).

So If I was to install the OS on the ssd and bulk things like videos and games e.c.t on the hard drive would the system be just as quick as withonly  an ssd?

Mostly, just the programs on the HDD would obviously be slower (Hence why you load frequently used programs).

Ah, alright. I haven't done a lot of research into the Ryzen chips yet, will need to look into them.

Yes! Definitely use an SSD for OS and frequently used programs like MS Office or Libre Office.  I just updated my Fathers computer from an Old 5400 RPM 160GB drive to a Adata 128 GB SSD last night.  Its night and Day. He cant believe how snappy the computer is.   I run a Kingston 120 SSD for OS and a 1 TB Segate 7200 RPM HD for Games and storage.  If budget is a concern you get a 120 GB SSD for 60$ US and a 1 TB drive for 50 or less. Heck go down to 500GB I bet the price starts to drop off.

Adata 128 GB SSD https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU800-128GB-3D-NAND-ASU800SS-128GT-C/dp/B01K8A29BE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496750709&sr=8-1&keywords=Adata+SSD

1 TB WD HD https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Cache-Desktop-Drive-WD10EZEX/dp/B0088PUEPK/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1496750752&sr=1-3&keywords=1tb+hard+drive

Good luck!

Thanks a lot that sounds great I think that's what I'll go for, a wd blue or the like for bulk storage and an sd for OS, office, browsers and the like. Thanks!

I know I'm late to the party here, but using a computer running on mechanical storage makes me want to cry. Even if you got a cheap low capacity SSD and used a mechanical drive for mass storage you can avoid ripping your hair out.

(May be exaggerating but not that much :) )
