4790k h110i gt high temperature

Go to solution Solved by Maslofski,

RMAing the unit now, in exchange for an h115i

I feel like my temps are higher than they should be.

heres 2 pictures, in the first one i ran an aida64 stress test with my pump set to quiet and performance modes, and the second picture is the idle temps.

my room feels about 24ºC

ive been using this pc for about 2 years now.

first picture: the temps on corsair link read up to 99ªC on core 2, so i stopped it at that moment each time. it throttled 4% in quiet and 2% in performance mode.

second picture: idle temps.

any idea whats going on?

1. Check fans of the cooler. Do they spin and ramp up correctly?

2.Thermal paste on CPU. Is it dry?

oh they ramp up, they get quite loud, which is how i noticed this. let me check the thermal paste then

Ok so first the 4790k is a hot chip as it is overcooked out of the box, I had a similar problem with mine hence why I have a 7700k now.

Make sure that your pump is running at full RPM as I found the corsair link resets you config after updates sometimes. Also setup a custom fan profile they could be ramping up too slow.

THIS CPU IS SO OVERCOOKED, IT'S BASICALLY POWDER.

What is the water temp when you hit 99C on the package?
If the water temp remains mostly the same as on idle then there is a contact issue between the cooler and cpu whether dry cpu paste or anything.
Do you have your fans set to ramp on processor temp or water temp?  I highly recommend to ramp based on water temp.

Most likely a bad mount.

remount the cooler with fresh paste and you should be fine.

pump speed doesn't matter that much, does it?

the water in your loop will heat up no matter what, circulating the hot water faster has no benefit.

Can you even change pump speed for h-series coolers?  I didn't think it was even an option to change pump speed via corsair link.
'Performance' and 'Quiet' mode refer to fan curves is all.

If the pump is at a low RPM the there isn't enough water passing over the contact plate. You need the water to return up to the radiator for effective heat dissipation, hot water can't transfer heat very well.

Pump speed doesn't matter as long as water is moving. More or less speed does nothing as your cooling capacity is stopped by the total volume of water and the radiator's ability to transfer heat out of the loop. @RadiatingLight

nope, it was still quite fluid, although it was a bit sticky on the cpu side, so i put on new thermal paste now.

i looked at the thermal paste as Jurrunio suggested, and the screws did feel a bit loose. now with fresh thermal paste and the screws tightened its staying at 75-90ºC on aida64 stress test, no throttling, so i think this was part of the issue, thank you!

ive got it set up so that my radiator fans ramp up when my cooling liquid gets to a specific temperature:

20ºC   500 rpm

39ºC   728 rpm

49ºC   1001 rpm

64ºC   2126 rpm

80ºC   4000 rpm

That fan curve is still based off CPU temps AFAIK.

water should never get to 80c in a loop. the curve goes up to 100c, where the water would literally turn into steam.

Having an all-in-one steam cooling loop doesn't seem as ludicrous as a water cooling loop.

This is why I will never get a corsair aio, I only ever hear bad things about them, and the fans they come with suck.
