GPU for my NAS

Hey peeps,

I just setup my NAS today!

i7 5820k ----> underclocked to 2.4 Ghz for power efficiency :)

AsRock x99 m-itx

Node 304 <3

2 x 10 tb seagate ironwolf

250 samsung 850 evo cache

kingston 32 gb hyper x fury flash drive

Antec earthwatts 550 Gold

But the last bit is a little irritating :/. As I am using x99 and a 5820k, i need to have a video card. I am currently using an HD7950 Ghz Edition as my display driver. That as we all know is a very power hungry card. I was wondering what is the cheapest and lowest power gpu i can put in there for 24/7 operation :)

Cheers Guys :D

Maybe something like a GeForce GT 710 or Radeon HD 5450. Cheap and only 19w TDP. Really though, anything is fine as it's just for a display output.

Was looking on ebay for GT 210/710 and stuff like that and it turned out to be more expensive than what i paid for my 7950 lol. even used.

Will the 7950 draw too much power as a basic display driver though? I know this is old school AMD but it is not even drawing colour pixels for unraid

no reason do, just make sure c states are on, and then let it run at full. It will run at 800mhz most of the time no matter what you set it to(or can use more at 2.4 as its forced to run at 2.4 and can't go down at idle.

actually doesn't use much at idle. It uses about the same power as a 5450 at idle(me tested). The big difference is under load. But for a gpu, look for a cheap card on ebay or craigs list and your fine. Id get this though http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Radeon-109-C26457-01-HD-6450-DVI-Display-Port-PCI-e-Graphics-Card-C264/371961581039?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41375%26meid%3D9e8aa72548564438904d8948a28c6377%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D152570489335

Considering it's essentially going to be at idle all the time, it won't draw much power. It would draw more under load, but the vast majority of NAS systems just display simple lines of text, so there's no real load to speak of.

How can there be so many [profanity] [profanity] [profanity] [profanity] [profanity] [profanity], overpricing stuff so much.

The cheapest one I can find seem to be this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-ATI-Radeon-Hd-3450-Dms-59-256mb-Pcie-X16-S-video-Graphics-Card-B629-SFF-/272696147306?hash=item3f7df4fd6a:g:GWoAAOSwax5YztgJ

On power side, a low power graphics card will reduce cost of power over time. Even though modern graphics card use little power (my RX 470 uses 8W) when idle, low power ones still consume about half as much power. This will add up since NAS are meant to be turned on most of the time

BTW, other than underclocking your 5820k you can also disable some of the cores.

1) Will do :) will put it back to auto

2) Do i really need a new GPU or the 7950 will do the job for now? the only worry apart from power consumption i have for it is that it causes me to sacrifice 2 drive bays... maybe something low profile would help in that regard

keep the 7970 if you have one. Power is about the same at idle(you have a bad system for idle power, probably in the 80-100w range, you can get that to about 30 watts if you got a i3 or pentium(do that path on if that would save money). Also if you don't need the power your probably better off selling the cpu+board+gpu and getting a lower power one.

like $35(lol wut) for the card and 50 for shipping lol

most of the components on here are repurposed retired gaming stuff so it was reasonable. All I bought was a motherboard so it was cheap overall. like 150 bucks for a motherboad and case. I'll see the impact on my electricity bill this month and move accordingly. :)

Literally just go buy the cheapest GPU you can find. HD5450's are often found for very cheap on most retailer websites. Or you can check eBay I guess.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

A passively cooled HD 5450 is what my Intel P67 chipset powered server uses since that lacks Intel IGP support.  While others argue an HD 7950 'won't use too much power if idle' let's considder some other things:

1) The HD 7950 is still going to need power connectors and clutter up the machine with more wires feeding into it.

2) The HD 7950 is huge and taking up two slots, possibly blocking another slot which could be used for a SATA controller card.

3) The HD 7950 will most likely be spinning it's fans, even if at low speed, at all times.

Meanwhile, while not as discrete as IGP, you can't deny that this HD 5450 in my server takes up a lot less space, it's passive (Not all versions are passive, so look before you buy), and it doesn't need any external power cables.
