Hey all.

I've been planning on getting 2x 128gb Samsung pro 840 ssd's , raid - 0 however, would I be better off buying just one 256gb 840 pro?

I only game on this system and hardly write.

It would be slightly cheaper to buy a single ssd

Thanks

I just bought a 2nd 128GB 840 Pro yesterday, it will arrive tomorrow, I had one 128GB for almost a year now so I'll be able to tell you tomorrow what kind of a speed improvement I notice when running in RAID 0

Why bother with a RAID0 SSD array on a gaming rig. Just get 1 256GB model.

what would be the difference between a 250gb and a 256gb? The 256gb is £30 more expensive, is this due to the 256gb having slightly quicker read/write speeds?

As far as I know, there is no 250GB 840 Pro. The 840 Pro only comes in multiples of 128GB. The 250GB model will be an 840 (Non Pro) or an 840 EVO. the differences there being TLC flash instead of MLC... so the usual - much slower writes speeds*, lower lifetime, just a lower class SSD overall, I mean, they're both still great SSD's  but the 840 Pro is... Pro.

So, In RAID0 -

I definitely notice a difference, programs do seem to launch faster, especially programs that usually take a while to launch such as Origin, or Photoshop; they launch much faster. I have only played battlefield 4 on this so far but levels do load noticeably quicker.

I also noticed that installing programs is a much faster process now.  So yes, going from a single 128GB 840 Pro to 2 in RAID0, there is definitely a difference, however, I have never used a single 256GB drive so I'm not sure how that compares...

thank you for your feedback. It was very tempting to go for the two 128's but I've come to the decision of buying a single 256gb for now, that way if i ever need or feel like it, i can always buy a another drive :)
