PC for Work/Gaming for my SO

Hi there,

so my SO needs a PC for her work (motion tracking, cutting,  all that Adobe Creative Cloud Stuff/Avid Media Stuff and some gaming. She works as a freelancer in Trailer/TV-Ad production.

Right now she is only working on my Rig (see 2nd PCPartPicker-List) or on her old Dell Laptop (from 2012). She works there when I occupy my PC for gaming or something else.

This is not ideal for both of us since I can't play when she needs my PC so she decided that she wants to invest in a PC. Since she has limited knowledge of building something on her own she asked me to do it. Her budget is kinda small (~1k €) but she needs some horses. From my observations Adobe AE doesn't care about the graphics card so I plan to give her my old MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G which is collecting dust atm and it still can run games pretty decent.

This results in the  following shopping list:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600X 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor  (€254.24 @ Mindfactory)
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler

This build I have in mind for a couple of weeks and I'm not that convinced. So I thought: Maybe it's better to Upgrade my PC and go with Virtualisation (I plan to Upgrade my 2*24" Monitors to a 34" Ultrawide, but not sure which on right now and it's irrelevant).

Mine right now is this one:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair - H115i 104.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus - Z170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
Storage: Samsung - 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Steam, uplay, origin etc.)
Storage: Samsung - 850 Pro Series 512GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Windows lives here)
Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Green 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (this one was a failure but still have it build in but nothing is stored here)
Storage: Western Digital - BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (Games and Documents)
Video Card: Zotac - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB AMP! Extreme Video Card
Case: Corsair - Air 740 ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair - RMx 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Monitor: Dell - U2414H 23.8" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor
Monitor: Dell - U2414H 23.8" 1920x1080 60Hz Monitor

So is it reasonable to go for an unRaid upgrade (i7 77k, bit more ram, maybe z270, 2nd 850evo pro, more HDD Storage) on mine or do you think it makes more sense to build her a dedicated PC?

From my understanding I can allocate more Ressources (CPU Cores, RAM) to my SO VM when it's needed (aka time critical stuff), a reboot of the System and VM shouldn't take ages.

Thoughts and recommendations please, i confused myself :)

Changed it a bit to this https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/RYVDd6

fully modular PSU, IMO a better mobo for features and OC, and ryzen 7 1700, OC it to arouund 3.8-4Ghz easily and has the 16 threads that you might be able to take advantage of for very little more money, still comes in under budget too.

What is so bad about Gigabyte motherboards ?

I had GA-A75M-UD2H and it worked perfectly and when I upgraded Windows, all the drivers were stable

No, there's nothing wrong with them at all. Just the ASrock one had better features IMO, it has an NVME + a SATA m.2 slot, decent amount of VRMs/power phase for better OCing, which is vital with the 1700 IMO, it's very easily OC'ed to between 3800-4000Mhz, just by chinging the frequency and setting static voltage on vcore to around 1.3v, that's all you need to do (edit: I meant for 3700/3800 - might need quite a bit more voltage to achieve a stable 4Ghz). If you want a "definite" stable OV then stick with 3700, it would do that no problems whatsoever, whereas a higher OV might require a bit more testing for stability.

I haven't got or been able to test the gigabyte one, whereas I have the ASrock in my personal rig, and done builds for a few others now with this board and a 1700 or 1600, and have tested them pretty thoroughly and not had many issues, the issues that did crop up are IMO more to do with the fact that there aren't more OC options available in the UEFI. I ahve managed to get the 1700 to 3700 no problems on every one I've had with these boards, and some are stable at higher frequency too. But for 24/7 use, or important stuff being done on the PC, I would stick with 3.7Ghz personally. When it's not important 3.9/4Ghz is achieveable with more voltage, but I'm not happy with that amount of volateg for 24/7 use personally, and TBH there's not a discerneable difference in most workloads between the 2 frequencies anyway in my experience.

TLDR: Nothing wrong :D

ASrock has a good reputation now for certain, I have been using them for the past few years and not had any major problems. I have built quite a few systems in the last few years and most of them have had ASrock boards as I usually choose boards I know to be relaible and good to work with and a good feature set. ASrock ticks all those boxes for me and have been very innovative in their boards features of the past few years. No they are not the budget end of Asus, even though they started that way. IIRC they are owned by the same company that owns Asus, but are their own company and does not have ties to Asus as such. I think when you had that bad board was when Asus were behind the designs etc of it if it was 10 years ago.

I have tried all the major manufacturers of mobos, and whilst in some regards there is not much to pick between them, I find the features that Asrock have on their boards and at such good prices is great... that said though I am not a fanboy, if another company were to have the same-ish price and better features, or even come close to the same prices, then I would go with that company maybe.

BTW, I am using the stock wraith cooler on my 1700 and even at full load it is not that bad noise wise, but IMO you would be better off getting the wraith cooler first with the rest of your build and see how it goes. If it turns out too noisy for you, then get a quieter one then... I can't see it happening though, I have my PC like 12 inches from my face and at full load it is still not that bad, and my case doesn't have any sound dampening or anything either. It's not even close to the sound of a desk fan on low settings if that's any help to you. I wouldn't be able to stand it if it was loud either and would have swapped my noctua d15 on there if so, but it's not even the same loudness as that IMO.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

Also, OP, does she need monitor and peripherals or not?

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Not yet. I have some spare parts in good conditions. Peripherals are something we can upgrade later.

You're right. Switching the cooler later should give us more budget for horsepower.

If you don't need the extra hdd you could get a 500gb ssd while staying under budget.
