Is there a reason (beyond cost) that you can't just put a tonne of magnets in a mousepad, fill the mouse with inductors and just have the wireless mouse charge its battery as you naturally move the mouse across the pad? How much power do modern wireless mice even need?

I suppose that could work, you could use thin neodymium magnets and as long as you don't mind a semi think mouse pad. Or embed them in the desk under the pad. It would work great for people who are low sensitivity users but for people like me it wouldn't work I prefer my dpi around 3200-3800 and I hardly move my mouse at all. I don't know how much power they need but you could probably rig a voltmeter system to find out.

I don't think it would be super practical because I would guess they need more power then they would generate but it would be a super neat project

Oh yeah I hadn't considered that.

I like the idea but it would be hard to find a target group of people, the people who it would work best for are people who play competitive fps games. But the people who play those probably use wired mice in part to reduce latency. It could make a cool conversation piece though

Well if Logitech's claims are true then latency isn't really an issue any more. (It isn't for me, but I also can barely tell 120 fps from 60 fps.)

That is also true, if you build one for personal use then you should patent it. Maybe a major company would be interest and you could make some money. If not you still have an awesome mouse that no one else has

As much as I wish I were in the financial position to buy a very high end wireless gaming mouse just to take it apart and whack some coils in it... xD

I'm also not sure I can patent Faraday's Law, but meh.

You could get a cheapo old mouse. Some can be pretty large and might have extra space. You also wouldn't be patenting faraday's law, just the use of it in a mouse but admittedly that might not work out well, especially considering it would be built into an already existing company's mouse.

I really like the concept though, it would make a fun project to work on
