I'm looking for a VPS to run a Factorio server. The one I'm using right now from OVH is a single core 2.4GHz (Xeon E5v3, Ubuntu 16.04 Server) and it got to the point where it cannot handle the map anymore.

Can anyone recommend a better VPS? The game and server are single threaded, so I don't need multiple cores and 2GB of memory are enough.

Thank you.

Do you need a new computer to keep up with it? Or a new OS? From a quick Google, a VPS is a VM server.

You could get a cheaper case, some slightly cheaper RAM, skimp on the mobo, and get a spinning HDD to save a few bucks. IDK how much storage you need, so I only put a 120GB SSD.

what build has got to do with this?

His looking for VPS provider, not building a server, or a gaming rig.

Nooo. I need a new VPS/Dedicated server I can rent. Something that offers 3GHz+, preferably one or two cores since Factorio is single threaded.

Unfortunately your requirement isn't really doable for VPS natural environment (which is multicore/threaded more cores/thread more server to host).

The best option is looking for VPS with i3 but it's hard, maybe you hit the wall with this one, you either host your own, or co-locate your own machine or rent i3 dedicated server.

OVH Is the cheapest provider out there. Can't you switch to a higher tier one?

Most VPS'es run on Xeon's. If you want Single core performance you should look at their dedicated gaming machines. They are more expensive though.

The thread was moved to the Servers and NAS section

Have you tried upping it to 2 cores? Modern OS' run much better on multiple cores - while the Factorio server may only be a single threaded application - it is sharing that thread with the OS. With 2 cores you're getting parallel processing of OS and application tasks.

I've only done colo hosting for game servers so no recommendations here. Though you may also try /r/VPS - i know a few guys that love comparing VPS that discuss over there.

How about AWS? There the biggest out there by far and have a lot of different configs to pick
