I`m about to upgrade my system and was going to buy the 7700k but with rumors of the new lineup I`m wondering if I should wait for the new 7740k(?), either way I`ll be changing motherboard as coming from AMD so the new socket won`t make a difference to me. If it is a 6 core will we see games starting to take advantage of it more? It doesn`t feel that long since 2 was more than enough. So is waiting a better option?

Don't wait for the 7740X as it won't really perform better than a 7700K and you will need a more expensive motherboard to use it.

Waiting for Intel's reaction to Ryzen is worth it imo, but a 7700K will be all you need for gaming for a long while.

Speaking strictly from a gaming perspective, the 7700k will be enough for a long time coming.  I don't think waiting at this point would be worth it.  Even if there is a performance gain, i don't think it would be enough to justify waiting for a long period of time.

Intel has been using the X for years, but only for their top SKU. All they've done differently is apply it to the whole HEDT platform.

If they were that insecure, I don't think they would be releasing another 4/8-core i7 at ~$350 with more barriers to entry than the previous one. :P

Yes on the highest end of all CPUs, now it uses across every thing... I just felt it is stupid personally and it does seems like an attempt to be more like AMD, maybe the X weights more than K, who knows... and now the highest end CPU is XE? I'm telling you in this path we'll end up with more letters than numbers on these CPUs at some point xD

The joke is on a 4c/4t CPU on x299 that costs about what you'd pay for a ryzen 7 1700 + b350 (and you get a free cooler with AMD).

At the moment I have an AMD fx-4100 (yes it is that old but still gives decent results mostly). Been planning on upgrading it for a long time just never bothered and now I have extra cash burning a hole in my pocket. I can get a discount with Intel (friend works for them) so that`s what made me jump across to them.

It`s not likely but could the 7740 bring a sizable performance gain to make it worthwhile or could Intel`s TIM get even worse (I don`t want cook meals on the chip)

I think the highest-end is just an X, still. As in i9-7920X.

Edit: Oh, nevermind, I didn't see the i9-7980XE. Yeah, that's a little stupid.

They aren't using it on everything. As I said, only the HEDT platform. All LGA-2066 CPUs get an X, LGA-1151 CPUs still use the K. I'd argue the X actually means more when it differentiates a whole platform, rather than one arbitrary product at the top.

we've had 4 core CPUs for a long time now and hardly any games take advantage of them. Don't hold your breath for wider spread use of multi-core CPUs in gaming.
