i need some help choosing a $50-$150 quad core gaming cpu. I'm going for a build that plays new games at 1080p ultra settings

1080p ultra? Pentium G4560 (dual core) + RX 580.

 

There are no quad cores under $150 worth it. There are a few between $150 and $200 though.

what are the draw backs of dual core with threads vs a quad core.

2. Think of a core as a tunnel. 2 cores are 2 tunnels.

The threads are roads leading up to the highway. So it is not as good as 4 tunnels with 1 road each(quad core). But it is better than 2 tunnels with 1 road each(dual core).

Honestly your going to have to raise that budget a bit if you want an intel 4 core. Another thing is Intel has Skylake X and Kaby Lake X coming out soon along with X299 chipset. With AMD's new agressive competition there going to have to change their pricing strategy which could cause a price drop in older CPU'S.
