Picking a GPU for my dad

NorthLake
Go to solution Solved by Billy_Mays,

RX 550 or a GTX 1030 will be fine and it's the age of the GPU it doesn't support more than 1080p

My dad got tired of using a (near) square monitor for a lot of multitasking so we went to the local store and bought an ultrawide from LG (LG 34UM68, two HDMI's and one Displayport), but when I plugged the new monitor in his video card (I think it's an ATI Radeon HD 4350, it has HDMI, VGA and DVI-I Dual Link), I got a weird resolution. Turns out the resolution is capped to 1920x1080 while the monitor's is 2560x1080. I've tried every driver and update I could find, but to no avail. I don't know where exactly the cap happens, but to me the simplest solution would be to buy a new GPU. Would that be the best solution? If so what would be the best GPU to buy? He often has a lot of programs opened, but that would be like seven internet explorer tabs (yes, internet explorer), eight word windows and five excel windows. He doesn't game and he doesn't do video editing, so I'm looking for the cheapest GPU (His budget is around €80/$90) which supports 2560x1080@75 with HDMI or Displayport.

By the way, I'm still fairly new to PC building (meaning I've watched plenty of video's, but haven't built one myself), so don't fire all the difficult words at me that could possibly fit in this situation.

Where would be a good place to look for second hand GPU's, you think? I won't try every store I find, we are talking about second hand after all...

At 80 euros you could look for used GTX 750 Ti or 760/770 if you are licky enough

However I believe HD 4350 has max resolution of 2560 x 1600 so even if you couldn't make it run at full 75Hz you should still able to drive that resolution at 60Hz at least (can't find what's the max refresh rate of it)

A GTX 750 Ti can run up to 4K no problem.

However you should note that this is only for simple outputting to a monitor. If you wish to play game on it then you shouldn't set your expectations too high as that budget isn't big for a gaming card though older and light games should able to run it just fine

well, he isnt gonna clock it and as long as the card works when he gets it there shouldnt be any problems, the reviews on this card is also good.

check out ebay for secoondhand card, but check sellers review and rma possibiltites before comitting to a buy

The card should be able to drive that resolution. Which port are you using? HDMI?

I did a bit of research and it looks like the 4350 only has hdmi 1.2, which can only drive up to 1920x1200@60 hz, which is probably why this is happening. You should look into getting a DVI I to HDMI adapter, just make sure it supports at least hdmi 1.3

Umm... Only one of those actually exists and its overpriced for its capabilities.  A rx 460/560 will get the job done at 2560x1600 with good frames or if you want to spend a bit more, a 470/570

They both exist and it's better than an Igpu and they are similar in specs so it's hard to choose which ones

So I did a bit of research, and I found out that the PSU can only supply 300W... Putting every component into http://powersupplycalculator.net/ gives an average idle power of 56W and a load power of 173W. According to this site I should get a psu of 249W if I don't have a gpu. The 750TI draws 65W at maximum, so I guess that'll fit.

By the way, after a lot of research (looking on the bottom of the case) I found out what model the PC is: Compaq Presario CQ5225NL. I'm trying to see if the motherboard can even support the PCI version, but It's not commonly mentioned.

This would be an ideal solution, indeed. The only problem is that i can't find that exact adapter. I would need an adapter from HDMI or displayport to male dvi-i dual link. I could only find female dvi-i adapters or other dvi adapters entirely...

And I just realised he uses the onboard speakers from the monitor as main speakers, and as far as I know DVI doesn't carry over audio...

Right...

Looks like new gpu is a better option then.

I found out it's a pre-built: HP Compaq Presario CQ5225NL, which has an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300, but how would I be able to use the iGPU? The only display connection on the motherboard is vga, which the monitor doesn't have and the monitor doesn't have a separate audio input connector...

Nvm then I was just thinking if it had an iGPU that supported higher res :P
