ASUS Z170-K with an i7 7700k

Is it compatible with the board or it has to be updated with the latest BIOS version?

Also if not can you update the BIOS without having a CPU installed(flash bios from USB)?

you can't update without a skylake cpu.

it may or may not come with the bios already updated.

You can ask the retailer if is has the right BIOS or you can buy a cheap skylake celeron or something to update the BIOS yourself.

Will the cost of buying the cheapest skylake CPU + your desired Z170 mobo be higher than the cost of a Z270 board?

They did but if the board was produced let's say 1 year ago and is all packed up and sitting on the shelf of Amazon store and you end up getting that old unupdated BIOS board then you are screwed

Most Z270 chipset board support up to 3800 Mhz, for example the cheapest one which is Z270P-D3 around ~$110 does that

Maybe they did, i don't know.
You don't know when that mobo went off the production line. It may still have the old BIOS

Only after a BIOS update.

Only Z270 boards are compatible with 7th generation intel CPU's from the factory
