Synology or Build

Hey. I am looking into investing into a NAS for my household which deals with a lot of photos and videos and other file formats. I was looking at the Synology DS1817+, but I was also considering building one myself. The main thing is power consumption since this device will be on 24/7 for a few years and over that time the power bill really builds up where I live. So I was wondering what you guys would think is more power efficient. Also, something to note, I am using it strictly as a NAS and file storage, no other servers and stuff running on it.

well apart form the price which obviously suggest to build your own:

I went with a Synology NAS ages ago (5bay) and I asked myself the same question, built or buy a NAS. I went with the NAS and I don't regret the decision, it is performing flawlessly for over 5 years now without maintenance (relatively dust free environment though), one HD was sacrificed to the 24/7 god of operation, but other than that it's fine.

hope that helps

Here is stronger build in every way. I know you said you will be using only for NAS but later you can rock on some VM's for game servers and Plex media server.

This motherboard has on-board video already, if it is just being used as a NAS/Plex Server or even for VM's he doesn't need a discrete video card,

If he's willing to buy an 1817+, he has a bigger budget than that. Plus, that build has an AMD CPU in it, so it will be a power hog.

I honestly recommend going with Synology. We have been using them with our clients for 5+ years and they have never let us down. They are highly optimized, and more suitable for the home environment.

My native language is C++

It will be power hog cause of 4 cores for 50 dolars which is pretty good deal

I have been also using Synology and I can say it dissapointed more than I expected

Ok, with the power:

Where I live 1 kWh is about €0.25 that is abut 2.2€ per watt and year of continuous running time. You will probably replace it within 5 years, so do not spend more than 10€ per watt difference.

I am not interested in saving on the initial investment. I am looking into the long term investment of the device.

Also hail the son of our lord linus, Luke the pokemon blue god and master.

You should not only consider the hardware side on this, When you build your own NAS you also have to think about what OS/NAS-Software you want to use and you have to do maintenace on it.

If you want a "setup and forget" system, well at least something that comes close to that, I would recommend Synology. It is very easy to set up and very user friendly in maintenance task.. E.g. you can set it to auto update, it reminds you to scrub your volumes or even setup a schedule to do it automatically.

Constant crashes and I also had RAID array that failed and lost 10 TB of data.

Crikey! I can completely understand your feelings towards Synology now - if I lost even 1TB of data due to a failed RAID array I wouldn't go anywhere near the HDD/NAS manufacturer again!

Again, out of interest - I don't want to end up loosing the same amount of data!, which NAS and HDDs were you using?

In any instance, I'll be double checking my backups this evening!

Sorry for the late reply...
