Hello there!

Recently, i was all set to build a ryzen computer, with my parents willing to pay for half the price of the system. To put it simply, I F@@ked up my exams and so I'm left with 650sgd (460usd).

this is my current system:

i5-750 (3.7ghz oc)

gt 710

msi p55-cd53

cooler master elite 431 plus

acbel 400w psu

2 X 320gb hdd

and i want to take on the challenge of building an old Xeon build (like the one Linus did) I live in Singapore and my local eBay is called carousell (www.carousell.com) and I spotted two Xeon e5620 for 15sgd (http://carousell.com/p/80740335/), quite a deal for two four core CPUs. Don't bother searching for a dual socket motherboard on there though. Thus I went on eBay, and I spotted this (http://m.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X8DTU-F-Dual-LGA1366-Socket-B-Intel-Motherboard-/162518645968?hash=item25d6ddbcd0%3Ag%3A50oAAOSwWxNY0YsX&_trkparms=pageci%3A506e5e1c-3d69-11e7-9ae0-74dbd180c0ce%7Cparentrq%3A264730ee15c0ab6730952251ffff29a3%7Ciid%3A1), looks good. Here is the product page (http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DTU-F.cfm). Will this motherboard work? Also will I have any interferences with my graphics card? (Like Linus did in the video). How can I tell what connectors I need? Also, please advise what video card I should buy within my budget. (GTA v, Fifa 17) 1080p monitor and tv. I don't mind used parts as Long as its from carousell.com, just want the most bang for buck. Should I just go for an RX 580 and use it for a real system I may build in November? Also what power supply? Am I looking for a 500W, 750W or what? Is this motherboard eatx? Should I get a case? Since this is passive cooling should I get a fan?

Thanks for all the help.

@Ordinarily_Greater sorry, what does that mean?

@herman mcpootis yeah, taobao is OK

The carousell advertising is like that, especially heading to ramadhan which is popular here. And chance to get cheap PC parts!

so you wanna frankenstein a PC ? nice thing to do for fun but if your final goal is only to get more frames in the games you mentioned, i think you could use the money better to do some upgrades to the system you already have.

replace that GT 710 and get something like a 1050ti or better.

- THIS alone will help your games A LOT -

how much RAM do you have in there ? if it is below 8gb, you know what to do.

a SSD for the boot drive is always nice to have as well.

that should be enough to make GTA V run OK (maybe not superduper 120fps perfect, but ok)

if you have some money left after GPU and RAM upgrade you could look for a used i7 for the socket 1156. most games will not benefit much from more than 4 cores either way.

don't bother with dual quad cores, they're really not worth the effort, extra wattage needed, etc. i would suggest you look for an lga 2011 xeon, costs abit more but worth it.

there's an E5 4620 8 core on taobao for around $36.30 SGD, and a generic x79 board is $92.40 SGD. replace the acbel psu with this seasonic G360 for $65, a gtx 1060 6gb for $365 and a 240gb ssd for $100 on carousell. total without shipping is around $658.70 but it'll cost abit more after shipping. reuse your ram, sell off the old components to get some extra budget for other things.

if you want to save more, you can get a gtx 970 off carousell for $200-250.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

As a couple have said, just build on what you have now.

I would do 3 things.

- Drop most of the budget on a GPU.
- 256gb SSD.
- extra ram if you have open slots which should be cheap. Going used here would be a good idea.

Since your only going to be gaming at 1080p the i5 may be able to manage since its OC'd so heavily. But if not I would find a used i7 and aftermarket cooler for your MB.

I think you should keep your current system in tact as much as possible. Yeah you screwed up your exams, but theres always next time and spending money you have now on parts that can be moved to your next system it will be better in the long run ie. the GPU and SSD. Than buying second hand MB's and cpus that will be no use later.

And if you want a little bit of that new build feel, maybe a LED strip for the inside of your case or LED fans would help make you feel better about not getting the upgrade you wanted. Which could also be used in your next build :) and if you wanted to go super cheap you could buy the LED's and wires at an electronics shop and learn to wire it up yourself, which gives you some of that DIY scrapyard wars feel you were going to go for with that dual xeno idea.

Yeah the LED's wont help performance, but combined with a new GPU and SSD and a REALLLY good clean I bet it will feel like a new PC!
