Just looking on any advice or instructions on how to set-up a raspberry pi 2 into a cheap NAS server.

i know how to run a server but just want to create a small home network where I can keep all my crap on my computer.

Thanks in advance

just bear in mind that raspberry pi only has 10/100 ethernet, not a gigabit nic. so if you want higher speed you should look into usb gigabit ethernet adaptors, which obviously wont give you a full gigabit (being usb 2.0 ports) you can expect more than double the speed

CPU: i7-8700K

Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z370-A

Memory: 32GB TridentZ RGB

GPU: Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming
Storage: 256GB Samsung 850 Pro, 4TB WD Black, 1TB Seagate somethingorother

use open media vault or just raspbian with SMB protocol or NFS or AFP depending on the OS you are going to be sharing with :)

this topic is being posted about using the Raspberry pi as a NAS is happening to often

hey @Windspeed36 can we have a dedicated post about the raspberry pi and its server/NAS capabilities for the Servers and NAS sub-forum as this is getting annoying with people asking if it's possible and what it can do....

thanks for understanding

anyways, yes it can be used for a simple NAS, many tutorials exist on how to do this

e.g http://www.techradar.com/how-to/computing/how-to-build-your-own-raspberry-pi-nas-1315968

it's so simple, even making a sandwich is complicated compared to this....

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

Been married to my wife for 3 years now! Yay!

If you haven't bought the Raspberry Pi yet then don't, grab either a Banana Pi Pro or Orange Pi Plus instead. Both have 1Gbps ethernet and SATA II ports so you can connect an actual HDD or SSD to them instead of relying on a USB 2.0 flash drive. They also both support the same OSes as the Raspberry Pi so any guide for a Raspberry Pi will work for both of these.

EDIT: Here in the US, the Banana Pi Pro is only $10 more than the Raspberry Pi. The CPU is slower, but the disk IO is significantly faster and the network speed is 6-7 times faster. The power usage is higher though but not by much (4.3w vs 3.5w).

You can make a Raspberry Pi into a NAS, but there are other faster solutions out there. To start, the RPi only has 10/100 ethernet, and no SATA to speak of.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2
