I've been looking at an Alienware 13R3 with a Core i7 7700HQ, a GTX 1060, and a 1440p OLED panel. However, I don't need it until the end of July. I was wondering whether I should buy it now, or if there are any new technologies, CPU architectures, mobile GPUs etc. that I should wait for that will be on the market before the end of July.

When does Coffee Lake Q hit? RX 470s and 480s in laptops?

I'd appreciate any information or recommendations I can get.

Regards,

Aereldor.

I'd say wait for it, both because by then new tech with better preformance for the same price might come out and also because prices may drop.

But its up to you :)

I already know that. It doesn't help.

My question is what upcoming technologies and/or architectures are going to be on the market by the end of July, and whether or not they justify waiting. I'd advise you to read the whole post, and not just the title.

Ryzen mobile should launch 'in the second half of this year´  so the first laptops may be out July. It depends though, im only making a prediction based on what I read, dont take it for granted.

Do you reckon they'll compete with Coffee Lake mobile? That might mean much later than July, as it's only about the beginning of Q3 2017.

Thanks for the info anyway.

It depends on what your going to use them for. For cpu intensive work ryzen will probably be better, but we need more info on both to be able to fairly judge. I think ryzen vs coffee lake will be close, but only time will tell.

Guess that gives me one reason to keep an eye on Computex. I wonder if Ryzen mobile SKUs will also benefit from high-speed RAM. Probably the case if they're based off that 'two CPUS linked by infinity fabric' design.

Rx 470s are already in some laptops. There aren't 480s in laptops afaik.

Vega launches soon, but that's for high end stuff so it shouldn't impact the Alienware 13. Ryzen and coffee lake might be interesting, but at the same time they won't be a huge upgrade over the 7700hq. While Ryzen APUs might be promising, it's expected than the best apu will probably only be around 560 performance level, max, which is far behind a 1060.

If I were you I'd just get it now, while there's stuff around the corner imo it's not big enough to make me want to wait.

Latency performance doesn't make much difference with Ryzen. It's the clock speed. Ryzen CPUs are essentially two CPUs connected by micro-PCIe that AMD calls 'Infinity Fabric'. I'm not sure how, but the clock speed of the memory - and the clock speed alone - is the clock speed of that Infinity Fabric.

Ryzen mobile is coming Q4 I think it is (maybe late Q3) and nothings been said about it so it could be awesome :) or it could be maxing out at quads and not be awesome and sorta suck. (I want an octa core laptop, as that sounds like an awesome thing to have)

I doubt there will be dual cores though, as AMD seams to not like dual cores and are trying to remove them and stop them from being things anymore (which is good if cheap and good quads become a thing)

Ryzen Pro Mobile is due in the the first half of 2018. I think they'll max at quads for Ryzen Mobile and try to work in 6 and 8 for the 'Pro' line.

It also means that Intel will have a monopoly at the low end with the G4560. I doubt there are going to be any Ryzen quad cores that compete with that in terms of price to performance.

the cheapest r3 chip I think is about $100 (think it's $129) so probably not, but you never know ryzen isn't half bad, and it will be a true quad core CPU
