Upgrading my rig

Go to solution Solved by Cyracus,

for overclocking on the cheap a cm hyper 212 or cryorig h7, for the best cooling performance lookup cpu cooler reviews for the noctua nh-d15 and pick anything that competes that you like the look of. If you can get a used i7 4770k or 4790k for cheap then that would be a good cpu boost, not really worth buying new though, and I'd suggest a 1070 if you want to keep up with modern AAA titles at max graphics, even OC'd I'm having to turn off some things to maintain that 60fps mark while I save up for a gsync monitor...a 580 8gb will work if you don't mind lowering those settings when needed though

Hello everybody.

I recently got my hand on a computer that is 2 years old.

It struggles a bit in some newer games and I think about upgrading it.

The question is. What to upgrade or if I should just keep the PSU and Case and get new GPU,CPU, motherboard and Rams.

Current build >

CPU : Intel Core i5-4690K

GPU : MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G

RAM : Kingston 8GB KIT DDR3 1600MHz CL10 HyperX Fury Blue Series

PSU : EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2

Mobo : GIGABYTE Z97X-Gaming 3

CPU cooler : Zalman CNPS10X Optima 2011.

Case : Corsair 230T Graphite Series

Thank you for any tips in advance.

PS : I know this CPU is for suited for overclocking if I slap better cooler on it.

But I have no experience with overclocking anything...

maybe faster ram, when I had 1600mhz ddr3 and moves to 2133 it made quite a bit of difference in newer games at the time like. I had noticed a huge difference in bf4

I am playing Battlefield 1 / Playerunkown's Battlegrounds / League of Legends.

Sometimes I wander on some new AAA games.

Problem is Battlefield 1 struggles on medium to high settings w/1080p.

I am that kind of guy that plays games on lower settings because i need stable 60 fps.

Well haven't been really thinking about this.

I was thinking about only keeping the Case and PSU and going with ryzen 1600 and Nvidia 1060 + 16 gb of 3200 Ram

Get faster RAM like @TheNeonWhiteOne said, and an RX 480/580 8GB and it should run well. And an SSD. Then send the 970 to me so I can use it in my collection of old half broken desktops. ;)

Good option but your money will go farther with a i7 4790k + gtx 1070/1080

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I am using m.2 SSD (128GB) for OS

As of sending you the GPU, well ... seems sketchy :)

How could it be a scam if you send me it for free? *innocent look*

Nah, I'm just kidding. Use it to help one of your friends get into gaming, or give it to a family member*, or keep it in case you just happen to need a GPU.

*but have them sign a document saying you are never obliged to help with tech issues and they aren't allowed to bother you if you say no.

-snip-

I'd say the 580. The RX580 is basically the same as the 480, just with a 15% or so speed increase. being as it's only a few bucks more, I'd go for the newest one.

Same bro, i wanted to upgrade a 2009 PC with Q9650 and GTX 970

A GTX 970 is decent, but depends on type of the game

Used 980ti is either hard to get here or expensive as f*ck.

As used 980ti costs 500-600€ here.

So after reading through all the of the replies.

I will keep the CPU and upgrade to 580 8GB simply because it offers more suited considering the prices of 1070 in my country.

I'll try to overclock the CPU and put a nice cooler on it.

Should work just fine then.

Thank you all for your tips and have a nice day !

Keep an eye out for second hand a 4790k/4770k, they will extend the life of your PC even further and will cost very little

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious
