Upgrade memory 16gb to 32 ?

I have a i7 4790k with gtx 980ti 16gb only play at 1080p. Thinking about putting some more memory in going from 16gb to 32 gb so first question does it have to be the exact same memory that's already in my pc ? And would benefit would I get from going from 16gb to 32gb ?

Unless you're running out of memory constantly, there's no need to get more memory. More memory does not make your computer faster if you're not running out of it.

Otherwise no, it does not have to be the same exact memory. It just has to have the same specs.

How can I tell if I'm running out of memory? I was told getting a memory upgrade would give me some extra fps in games ?

Unless you're going from like 2GB to 8GB, then no, also go to task manager and then to RAM to see if you are (most likely not)

Adding more RAM past 16GB will never give you more performance (FPS).

Tell that to fusion 360.

Where you'll see the need for more than 16gb of RAM is if you're doing some heavy virtual machine stuff or have hundreds of chrome tabs open.  Basically it's something you only need in workstations or servers.

For better FPS you may want to look at a 1080, 1080 ti, or a second 980 ti.  Not sure how much it will help you at 1080p though.  If you're trying to reach 144hz levels of gaming you're probably going to be looking at G-Sync or Freesync monitors.  If you're trying to increase FPS for lower latency in competitive games, overclock your i7.

I have 16GB of ram. The only reason to have more is for the above reasons. The only other reason to have 32GB of ram is because you can.

I have 16GB of ram and I multitask with netflix, like 10 chrome tabs AND a game open at the same time. I've never run out of memory. The only benifit is if you use it all, and I'm basically a worst case scenario for gaming, so I wouldn't worry about it until you find yourself getting RAM usage errors.

I've just been looking on task manager and noticed my 16gb ddr3 ram is only running at 1333 even though it's 1866 speed should I increase the speed and if so how do I do it ?

I have 32GB of ram I can have 100 tabs open in chrome have a game running and still struggle to get past 16GB used. trust me 16GB is enough unless you know you are going to do ram hogging tasks, like VM's,CAD work, ect.
