I have an old 1156 mobo from an AiO system which i'm upgrading for LAN parties and wanted to make a PC from the old components and give it to my aunt which really needs a newer one (still has an old P4)

Problem is, it has an odd USB issue, after a while of usage it starts popping up ''USB device not recognised'' and any USB device disconnects and reconnects, tho sometimes it doesn't reconnect at all until i leave the PC off a bit to cool down. The southbridge gets really hot and cooling it with a fan makes the problem disappear from what i see.

I already replaced the thermal paste. Is it dying or is there something else giving issues? (leaking capacitor or such?)

If the south bridge is getting too hot and cooling it makes the issue go away then I think the case needs more airflow.

maybe your burning out your southbridge, and when it gets too hot the computer disconnects power to that USB port and has to cool down

problem being that this was in an open case and it's the first time seeing this issue in general, especially this bad, i've had densely packed PCs before with almost no airflow and the southbridge never go this hot.

How? I only have a M&KB connected to the USBs. When the M&KB stop working, then all of the USBs don't connect at all, it's like everything is just dead until i restart the PC. Even cooling the SB after it gets hot doesn't help, USBs aren't coming back until i restart the PC

i probably think its burning out because i had the same problem a while ago on my work pc, until one time when i was using it smoke started pouring out and the computer shut off, so better get it checked out

Is it a particularly old computer? Some of the first things to die on old machines are the USB ports.

Haven't had smoke yet, tho smoke probably means a capacitor died and blew, most likely, so it could be a faulty capacitor leaking too much power to it.

It's an old 1156 board from an AiO PC (PackardBell) and from what i see Lenovo is the maker of the mobo. I know USBs like to die, but the thing here is that they work until the SB overheats and then they stop, if it's cool they work even under stress.

Unpredictable issues can arise with computers when they get old. If you can tell cooling the south bridge make a difference in how the USB ports respond then you've solved your own issue. You said the south bridge never use to get this hot. Well as I mentioned earlier these things can just pop up out of nowhere. Plus as computer hardware ages it can lose its efficiency (power in/performance out) they can inexplicably run hotter and consume more power. This is a sign the south bridge could be failing. For now more sufficient cooling seems like it solves the problem but a real fix would be a new motherboard.

nono, i bought this AiO to upgrade it and use for LAN parties, when it was in the AiO the USBs worked, or atleast as much as i used it before disassembling it to put in the new components. I meant after having hundreds of motherboards this is the 1st time i had an issue with overheating SB, that's what i meant by that.

Yeah, new mobo is better, but like i said i thought of giving my aunt the system since she has an  old P4 PC still, i could always get one of those SB heatsinks that is bigger and has a fan on it. Or just DIY one on there.

Alright.

You can buy relatively cheap copper heatsinks. How you'll attach it I don't know but it should help keep the temperature down.
