I was looking at getting a NAS, or building my own server for Multiple computer backup, video, and picture backups.

 

Is it necessary to use Antivirus/malware, IPS/IDS On these type systems?  I've seen some options for the Synology NASs for all above systems, I'm curious about what y'all think!

 

also, getting a new laptop to round things out, I was planning on continuing to use NORDVPN, any recommendations for Virus/Malware/IDS/IPS/Firewall? I'm an eager to learn amateur, that values Privacy and protection of my personal data.

The safest solution would be to use something like Plex for that then, don't open any native Windows protocols to the internet as that is usually a bad idea.

The best solution is to definitely use an anti virus software. My friend recently started using Plex and Fail2Ban, which I was reading about on this article. He said Plex is slightly better, however It might be to early to tell.
