SSD fast boot time but slow startup programs

Cs342

It's definitely something else, I have no problem opening the program and features at all, no slowdown and it opens instantly, loads the list within a second.

I think its Avast though, its at least worth a try to remove it.  See if it helps, if not just put it back on.

hi guys, my new rig has a Samsung 840 250GB SSD and I'm very impressed with the boot time given that this is my first SSD. However, even though it boots into Windows in a flash, startup programs like Skype and Dropbox take up to a minute to start. Is there a way to speed them up?

I have also promised myself to only use one antivirus even though all the others are better, if you don't care about super high protection but want a bit of peice of mind use Microsoft Security Essentials, haven't noticed any bugs and doesn't make any difference to your computer speed.  Its also super basic but don't expect it to fight off infections well.  It will protect you against some old joke virus sent from a friend via worm.  But won't protect from those intense porn viruses... whats it called, Ransomware thats right! don't expect Microsoft Security essentials to protect against ransomware.

If you really feel as if it's related to Avast!, feel free to enable  "Load Avast services only after loading other system services". Test it a few times on boot and check the time difference between Avast! being enabled on startup and Avast! being loaded after everything else has been loaded on startup.

Good idea! I'll try that

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

So AVG would have no performance impact while Avast has a large impact?

AVG is a good free virus scanner.

It also includes a "fix performance" utility that has a registry cleaner and deletes broken shortcuts.

It also has a defrag option, but I doubt you will want that on your SSD :P

One thing to add mate, MSE has actually failed to be certified by the Independent AV-Test 2 years in a row..

I know, but most of those tests are not "real-world"-like tests, so I've tested it in a virtual machine and it hadn't missed anything out of the ordinary, or what would be considered "serious malware" and no matter if you have HIPS, Auto-sandbox or even the best signatures.  The only way to really protect yourself is with only doing things you trust.  I certainly don't install MSE on clients systems, thats for sure because of that reason.  Because clients end up getting stupid babylon toolbar and clunky stuff and even sometimes the really bad trojans.  So thanks for adding that for me :)

Yeah, AVG now owns Tuneup Utilities so all of their performance tools are either based off of their Tuneup Utilities tools or the old tools, Auslogics.  AVG hasn't let my clients systems down yet.  HECK some of them are using the 2011 version and its still striking things with its fist and knocking things out as fast as a blob of butter would melt in a hot pan.

It's just nice to know how your AV would fair against Zero day malware and exploits that aren't direct malware, exploits within programs and what not, but "real-world" wise it's fine since it's pretty basic, but I myself being quite security concious I prefer to have a beefier AV.

Yeah, when I first became an AVG hall of famer I was paranoid and would literally have like 5 scanners... :| yet look at me now ... lol

Ha, dw mate, I've been in the same phase, now I just run Avast Internet + Malwarebytes and that's decent enough. Laptops run the same but with free and Comodo firewall.

nice.  I stil have a license of Kaspersky but it blocks minecraft and every time I make a rule it blocks it the next day... so I ended up slowly allowing more and more of Java... lol

Kinda odd that it would block it, only reason I would find is if it was one of the cracked versions.

Oh, its from minecraft.net  the problem was that Kaspersky was restricting Java.  Because it wasn't a counterfiet launcher.

I also just switched to Bitdefender antivirus free edition, takes up nothing and as easy and simple as MSE ^^
