Ok so I have windows 7 on my laptop and soon I am going to be upgrading to a desktop so I was wondering if there was anyway to transfer everything (OS, apps, info stuff like that) on to my new computer. my new computer has a trial version of windows on it right now and I am going to upgrading from windows 7 to windows 10 when I switch hard drives but I just don't have any money left over to buy a brand new windows 10 even from kinguin

you could do drive cloning but with that there will be issues with programs not running properly or being disactivated. I'd suggest you to put your data on another drive and do a clean windows install with your windows key, that should be written under your laptop

u might need to call up the support and tell them that you want to use the windows again, not that you cant have it on your laptop then, so if you want to use your laptop you will have to buy a new key

You can clone the laptop's drive to a desktop drive, but there will be issues such as drivers, hardware differences, etc. I would just do a clean installation of Windows 10.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

As I mentioned, cloning is NOT a good idea, especially going from a laptop to a desktop. If your new hardware supports Windows 7, then just do a clean installation and use the automated phone service to activate it with the key from the laptop. That's worked for me, but you'll need the same version (Home Premium won't activate Ultimate, etc).

No, when you install Windows there should be an option for you to activate via phone. Do that.

yea that. when you get to the activate windows option, there's a 'by phone' option, check that, and it should usually go through an automated process. but if it doesnt, you can speak with a customer rep and explain that your laptop has died and is no longer in use so you're using this key on a new system that you built. they Usually end up giving you a code to activate the windows.

As I said earlier, this is not a good idea. There will be a lot of driver issues, and other things like that.
