Just got my first console, an xbox one.

I got the controller that already has a 3.5mm jack, do I need the adapter to use the voice chat?

also, what kinds of headphones allow both game audio and chat audio to play through them?

Im using JBL S300's (the iphone model) and i hear both game and chat audio, but my microphone cannot be heard by the people on the other end.

Thank you!

Never had a problem with any of my headphones, might just be your ones at fault... try a friends headphones to see if they work OK. But no nothing special needed, just headset with mic that only uses one 3.5mm jack and has 3 connector rings for the heaphones righ/left and mic signals.

I purchased the Microsoft XBox1 stereo adapter that plugs into the controller (bought it from Best Buy out here in Toronto). It kept me happy for a year, as it provided volume control of my sound.  No compatibility issues with my PSB or Senheisser cans.  It sounded (to me) as though the sound quality was slightly better using this adapter than plugging the headphones directly into the XBox1 controller.  That might be my mind playing tricks on me (so your mileage might vary [buy it used and try it out?]).

Eventually, I picked up a Turtle Beach DSS2 DAC/amp ($40 used on Kijijii) and plugged it into the console's TOSlink port.  No more hiss or pops.  The virtual surround sound is a NICE bonus for me.

My 2 cents worth...
