Project Carbon (Finished)

Socky

*Original name was Brief Case*

Final update!

There's a few builds like this going on right now. Now the reason why I am building this is because I'm in high school right now and I can't drive till next year sadly. Many of my friends have laptops (all horrendously bad) and I'm the only one without one, with a very good reason, I HATE laptops. I want upgradability and a laptop isn't really on my list on the most upgrade able. Also there is no way I'm lugging around my NZXT Vulcan around school. So I decided to build a computer inside a briefcase, it maybe weird but it sure as hell won't stand out in the hallways of a high school.

The specs follow:

A8-6600k/ Athlon X4 750k - Have

Zalman Low Profile CPU Cooler - Have

MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 - Have

Corsair XMS3 1x8gb 1600MHz - Have

Seagate Momentus 750gb - Have

OEM GTX 660 1.5gb - Have

The Briefcase - Have

Solid Gear Neutron 400w - Have

Update #1 The Components

Update #2 Test Fitting

Update #3 Sneak Peaks

Update #4 So close to being done

Update #5 It's running!

Update #6 I have no idea what to call it

Update #7 Before the Vinyl Wrap

Final Update!

Are you sure you want to go with an ATX psu?

A TFX12V psu might fit a little better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151090

That was my original plan but 400 watts is the minimum I want. And the only 400w TFX PSU is made by a crap company. Unless you find one on amazon be my guest!

Small update, I don't have the time for 3D Modeling nor can I even try. Wish I knew how but I'm stuck to the old fashioned way.

Edit: the dimensions are on a 2:1 scale. also the length is off by an inch.

get 2x4GB. Also, silverstone has a nice SFX powersupply.

I'd highly recommend 2.5" hard drives because they are smaller, lighter, and more durable.

Meh I have the ram already, most of the parts are coming from some of my old computers. I have a 2.5 inch and a 3.5 inch (with Ubuntu on it) but the 3.5 inch is 500gb and the 2.5 inch is 750gb 7200 rpm so yeah I'd go 2.5 inch also. I am thinking of getting the 450w sfx Silverstone psu modular but the price is killing me because its $93.99 and like I said I'm 15, can't really do much. The donation has to come from the Bank of Parents.

What display are you going to use?

Well my friends have a 1080p/900p monitor I can use when I go to their house. At my house it would be a 1050p monitor.

  • 3 weeks later...

Small update I guess, testing if the way I'm now going to mount the GPU would work, so far it's been on it for about an hour. It's held on by double sided tape from 3M. I need to sketch up a new drawing of the setup for you guys.

As of now I'm still thinking of the power supply, I know I will go TFX or Flex ATX. Surprisingly there are 400w Flex ATX and no 400w TFX except the crappy one I linked. I'm trying to look for used shuttle 500w power supply's on ebay too.

Final update before I start throwing things into action! Finalized the way the build is going to look like. Since I'm getting the briefcase on Christmas I'll get started the next day so expect a huge update on the 26/27.

Just got the briefcase today and I test fitted! Everything fits perfectly, except for the fans. Which is not a big deal since I have 70mm and 92mm on hand. Last thing I need is the right power supply. The one shown in the picture is a Rosewill 300w psu. I will be getting a Solid Gear SDGR-TFX350

Lol, I can't get modular though. The form factor PSU I am going to use is TFX and the only modular one is a Seasonic and it is useless for the modular-ity.
