No internet because i have an unidentified network

Some information would be nice.

  1. Did you create any static IPs and or DNS servers?
  2. Did you add a router to your network, recently lost power or unplugged the modem?
  3. How is your network generated?.....ISP modem to router or switch or just one of those modem+router the ISPs tend to think is a good idea.
  4. Do any other devices on the network have an active connection?
  5. What have you tried to fix or make the issue worse the issue yourself?

Your not getting an IP address from your router. What router are you using and are you plugged direct into the back of it? Also is any computer on that same router working? If so do the same command on that computer.

Did you know the first three things they suggested needs a modem, router and PC reboot?...well it does.

Reboot your modem first then your router then your PC then report back.

You realise that the only unique info in there is his MAC address which is hidden by NAT in 99.99% of all cases. You cannot hack a computer by just knowing that info.

Even if it was working it would show an internal IP address which would be of no use hacking a computer.

As long as he is not posting screenshots of his router wan interface or passwords there is no danger.

OK, so your router is working and handing out addresses. So that leaves us with something on the PC or the physical connection. Please double check that the computer is connected to the router correctly.

Next is to staticly set an address and see if you have internet. To do that you need to go to the adaptor properties and the select TCP/IP v4 and go properties on that.

Try setting

IP 192.168.1.157

Mask 255.255.255.0

Gateway 192.168.1.254

Dns1 192.168.1.254

Dns2 8.8.8.8

And try your internet again.

If you get lost google how to set a static IP in windows.

When you plug it in, is there any lights on the PC's ethernet port that light up? Almost every ethernet port lights up when you plug it in. You could get a PCIe network adapter or a USB to check that as well.

thebros35, out.

Try from the console the following commands

ping 192.168.1.157

ping 192.168.1.254

arp -a

Also go to the adaptor and right click for status and check that.

good first steps:

power cycle the modem, the router and your computer.

run cmd as admin

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

EDIT: your dns is the same as your gateway? i could be wrong, but that seems wrong..  change your dns to 8.8.8.8 and alternate to 8.8.4.4 and see what happens

No - that's fairly common in most home and small business environments where DNS is cached within the gateway. In businesses running DHCP and DNS services off the gateway, that's where you'll see it separated
